    YMLA Retail Store is Closing – Moving Leftover Inventory to Block Party WeHo

    YMLA retail store, located at 8594 Santa Monica Boulevard, is leaving the building after being at that location in West Hollywood for roughly two years. The retail store, owned by Larry Block, is known for selling gym apparel for men and women (they also randomly sell lube and poppers). Located at the former LASC space, YMLA is currently having a sale offering up to 50% off the entire store according to a sign at the storefront.

    An employee tells WEHO TIMES that this isn’t a complete end of YMLA. The leftover inventory will move to Block Party WeHo, also owned by Mr. Block, located a couple of blocks west, in the heart of West Hollywood’s LGBT Rainbow District. Block Party will have a small YMLA section on the floor, but they will try to sell as much as they can at the current store, which is shuttering at the end of June.

    YMLA, which stood for Young Men Los Angeles and now stands for Young Mens and Ladies Athletic Wear (we’re guessing the “w” is silent) to attract a broader audience, was banking on the opening of John Reed Fitness for foot traffic, but according to the employee, business picked up some, but not by much, which has led to their closure of that location. John Reed took much longer to open than anticipated, and that area has not fully recovered after the closure of Starbucks, Kitchen 24, and the Sprouts grocery store, all located within walking distance.

    To stay afloat, at one point, the YMLA store space was rented to a retail store that sold football jerseys and other sporting memorabilia for a short time before it returned to YMLA.

    According to the YMLA website, the brand was founded in 1991 by Larry Block and Shirley Fong. In 2002, the original company was sold. Founder Larry Block retained the brand name, and YMLA returned to the City of West Hollywood as a new apparel store. There was a YMLA section at Block Party before Mr. Block opened the YMLA store down the street. And right after this year’s WeHo Pride, back to Block Party YMLA will go.

    Brick and mortar retail is a tough game, kudos to Larry for holding down a local landmark for all these years. Never mind the schadenfreude in the comments.

    Not surprising. John Reed Fitness doesn’t have a ton of members and they just didn’t have the traffic to stay in business. Block Party is currently for sale so we’ll see how their move goes. It’s very tough to be in retail right now and especially in West Hollywood.

    John Reed weho is very successful. Top 3 in the chain. The issue is John Reed members and most of West Hollywood do not want what YMLA is selling.

    This is sad. Unfortunately, times have changed and workout attire has changed with scientific research as have personal choices in attire.
    the bottom line is Larry Block keeps trying in West Hollywood. That’s a lot more than some and enough to keep me coming back. And as for is news outlet, I am grateful for a community news blog that reports the truth and allows for actual feedback from community members.

    Larry Block is a man-child and everyone knows it. His retail stores are trashy and add nothing to West Hollywood.

    He bought a website so he could trash his successful political rivals. He is a 4x failed city council candidate and he can’t accept that the residents of this great city see right through his antics. We have rejected him over and over and will continue to do so. He’s beyond pathetic just like you, Natasha.

    Support thy neighbor to get foot traffic.

    What’s funny about all of this is that Larry gave John Reed a free banner ad to supposedly support his neighbor. He made a big show of it.
    And now that YMLA is leaving, that free ad was taken away.
    Goes to show it was never about helping a neighbor.
    Larry is always only in it for himself.
    Now he’s sucking up to the new owners of Gym Bar.

    Every time I’ve ever walked passed this store I’ve never seen a person in there. OH one more shutter before they open – the DOHENY room that they’ve been remodeling into a new restaurant/bar isn’t moving forward and new ‘FOR LEASE” sign is up.
