At a regular City of West Hollywood City Council meeting on Monday, July 18, 2022, the city council approved item 2.S. agreeing to co-sponsor a Van Ness Recovery House movie fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, August 20, 2022, in Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park from 6:00 p.m to 10:00 p.m. The City approved the use of Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park, waive the Facility Use fee, and the Plummer Park three-hour parking regulation (estimated $468 in waived fees). The city also authorize the use of the City name and logo on invitations, programs, and other collateral materials for the event. The Communications Department will utilize all appropriate communication tools to promote the events including, but not limited to, the City’s website and social media tools.
The Van Ness Recovery House is the longest running recovery house serving the LGBT community in the nation. The a nonprofit organization has a mission to meet the critical and expanding needs of the LGBTQIA+ community for alcohol and drug addiction recovery. The Recovery House utilizes the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, and provides day and residential treatment, sober living, education, prevention, and outreach services in a socially supportive and chemically free environment. Services are available to anyone regardless of their ability to pay or their HIV status.
The Van Ness Recovery House is celebrating 50 years of service through 2023 with various events capturing the history and diversity of the recovery community it has served for many decades.
On August 20, 2022, the Van Ness Recovery House will be hosting a movie fundraiser in Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The fundraiser is geared towards members of the recovery community. It will be a fun, interactive movie screening of Grease, with tickets available for purchase for $20. The proceeds of the event will help support the work of Van Ness Recovery House.
The City of West Hollywood has made it a priority to address substance use services by providing funding for programming at a variety of agencies and by educating the public via community forums, innovative prevention campaigns and a substance abuse services guide. The City contracted with Van Ness Recovery House from 1992 to 2008 for a variety of different recovery services. Hundreds of West Hollywood community members have received services from the agency and continue to access its programs. Van Ness has hosted similar fundraising events at Fiesta Hall in the past, including a screening of the musical Hairspray, which was a well-attended and successful event. Support of this event is consistent with the City’s current policies and initiatives.
