West Hollywood Mayor, Sepi Shyne, has official filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to run for House of Representatives in the State is California District: 30 Congress. According to FEC, the filing was generated today, Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 15:13:36 p.m.
“I am proud to announce that I’m running for Congress in California’s 30th district,” reads a statement in her social media platforms. “I want to fight for an America that is fair and just for everyone, and now more than ever we need a representative who will stand up and fight for the voiceless.”
“The 30th District represents so much of the American Dream,” reads a statement on her website sepishyne.com. “It’s where people from all over the nation, the world come together to make their hopes and dreams come true – and Mayor Sepi Shyne has dedicated her career to ensuring that every person can access and benefit from the promises America makes. A fighter for all of us, Sepi has advocated for and delivered on some of the biggest challenges of our time: mental health care, affordable housing and homelessness, climate action, LGBTQ+ equality, social justice, reproductive rights, fair wages and creating communities where every person feels safe. Now, she’s ready to take her dedication to Congress, to help build a nation that benefits all of us. It’s our time to Shyne”
Democratic Representative Adam Schiff announced in January that he will run for Senate in the 2024 election for Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat in California. Schiff stated that he looks forward to campaigning hard and meeting Californians to earn their votes and trust. “Our democracy is at great risk,” he posted on his social media platforms. “Because GOP leaders care more about power than anything else. And because our economy isn’t working for millions of hard working Americans. We’re in the fight of our lives—a fight I’m ready to lead as California’s next U.S. Senator.”
His run for senate leaves his seat open in California’s 30th Congressional District and several Democrats have submitted paperwork to seek the 30th Congressional District seat held by Schiff. The group includes state Sen. Anthony Portantino, former Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, Los Angeles Unified School District board member Nick Melvoin, Assemblywoman Laura Friedman and former West Hollywood council member hopeful, Ben Savage, known for his role as the lead in the 90s sitcom “Boy Meets World”.
Mayo Sepi Shyne’s about profile reads as follows:
Mayor Sepi Shyne understands firsthand what it means to fight for a safer, stronger future for yourself, your family and your community. It’s a fight she’s been a part of her entire life, one she’s fought alongside so many in our community – and it’s a fight that she’s ready to bring to our nation’s capital as our next Congresswoman.
At the age of 5, Sepi’s family fled the Islamic fundamentalists that had recently seized control of Iran. In search of a world where Sepi would have the freedom to grow and learn and her brother would be safe from forced military service, Sepi’s parents brought their two youngest children to join their older siblings in the United States.
Like so many, Sepi and her family were guided by a belief that opportunity and freedom awaited them in California. Her path to graduate college and graduate school was not an easy one, but today, Sepi is the first LGBTQ+ woman of Iranian descent in the world to lead her city.
For more than 20 years, Sepi has worked hard to make that American Dream a reality for all who seek it, leading the fight for equality and civil rights for marginalized communities.
When Sepi was elected in 2020 to the West Hollywood City Council, she got to work immediately. In her first hundred days in office, she fought for support and incentive programs for locally owned businesses working to rebound after the pandemic hurt their bottom lines. Sepi took immediate action to increase rental assistance and began tackling the homeless crisis in the city and region. She supported accountability measures to audit and increase transparency in our local water agency. Sepi took measures to ensure that equity and inclusivity was at the heart of the city’s actions, including creating the social justice task force to ensure that Black, Indigenous and other people of color had a voice at the table. That was just in the first 100 days. Sepi hasn’t stopped fighting for her community, making real progress on the issues that matter most to working families.
A lifelong supporter of workers, Sepi worked to raise the minimum wage to the highest in the nation, while supporting small businesses as the transition took place. In 2021, West Hollywood earned the LAEDC Most Business Friendly Small City Award under Sepi’s leadership. And as a fighter for a cleaner environment for all of us, she took action to shift the food service industry in West Hollywood to sustainable plastic alternatives and fast-tracked our climate action plan by 10 years. Understanding that healthcare is a basic right she supports Medicare for All, and knowing that homelessness is a pandemic she took action and as a result homelessness dropped 60% under her leadership.
Knowing that crime was an increasing concern for her community, Sepi took action, finding creative solutions that provide more than lip service – they provide solutions. Sepi revitalized and strengthened the Block by Block Security Ambassadorship program, helping to prevent and report crime on residential streets. She required increased training in nightlife areas to prevent sexual harassment and assault, and made history by helping West Hollywood become the first city in the nation to initiate Drink Spiking Test Strips in local nightlife facilities. It’s Sepi’s creative, innovative approach that has led to decreased crime in our community and is much-needed in Washington.
Among her other accomplishments, Mayor Shyne served on the City of West Hollywood’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, on the City of West Hollywood’s Business License Commission, and on the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Advisory Council on which she continues to serve. She has also led many boards and organizations, including the LGBT Bar Association of Los Angeles, and as a Board of Governor and Steering Committee leader with the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles. Mayor Shyne is a Co-Organizer of WeHo Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a community group that was created during the pandemic to help provide resources for seniors, people with disabilities, and people in immunosuppressed households via social media and volunteer check-in calls.
In every board and organization she has led, she has recruited and elevated women and people of color to leadership positions to create more diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Sepi received her Bachelor of Science from San Jose State University with a double concentration in Accounting and Management Information Systems and a Minor in Drama with an emphasis in Directing. She received her Juris Doctorate with a specialization certificate in litigation from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.
Sepi lives in the Mid-City area of West Hollywood with her fur babies.

Surprised not to see any articles regarding the recall effort of Shyne. Other local news has reported that there have been enough signatures to have the recall move to the next step. Certainly newsworthy.
Reiki therapists are scammers. One look at her website where she claims she can psychically heal your pet over the phone was enough for me. In over her head I hope she fails.
LAMag reporter interviews her own mother who exposes Sepi as a liar:
Spectacular lack of self-awareness by commenter Enough!. Dude, read your comments. You don’t see the irony in bringing up that LA Mag article about her being bullied? She’s still being bullied. What a cheap and low shot to ask a mother to verify whether her daughter was a freak and an outcast that people didn’t like because she was a lesbian and non-white. What was the mother supposed to say about her own daughter? Especially during an event celebrating her? The mother obviously didn’t know Mayor Shyne was bullied then and she must not know her daughter is being bullied… Read more »
Agree, the mom might not have known. But the rest of the article makes it pretty clear she’s not trustworthy. Don’t think the mom thing should be the headline.
It’s not bullying to point out someone is lying. You obviously are a fan of hers, that’s fine. But don’t attack the rest of us for pointing out she is not who she claims to be nor are her accomplishments as grand as they are in her head. Have a good day.
It’s pretty shady to point out someone is lying when you don’t believe they are lying. You can’t say for certain she was not bullied regardless of what her mother said when she was put on the spot. When you come on these WeHo rags to character assassinate someone without bringing proof, that makes you a bully. The LA Mag rag is not proof and you know it. Have a good day.
Medical segregationist Sepi will forever be remembered for forcing non-sterilizing experimental medical treatments upon the population under threat of losing one’s job, education, ability to enter a public building, serve as public official or volunteer… and enabling calls to violence against the unvaccinated. Not even an apology after the vaccines were shown to not prevent transmission. Shyne belongs in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
This is what I mean by tired wehoville.com platitudes. Blaming Mayor Shyne for Los Angeles County COVID restrictions is about as bonkers as it gets. No. Sorry. Mayor Sepi Shyne will not be remembered for forcing non-sterilizing experimental medical treatments upon the population under threat of losing one’s job, education, ability to enter a public building, serve as public official or volunteer… You and your lot alone have decided to pin this on her. Stop the insanity.
while you are correct that there were many human rights violations during the pandemic, Shyne is responsible for creating the Shyne Fine, a $300 fine for NOT wearing a useless cloth mask OUTDOORS that targeted homeless people in WeHo. While other CC members at least would speak with medical freedom advocates, Sepi literally RAN AWAY from us at an outdoor picnic. She has a special responsibility for enabling the calls to violence against unvaxxed coming from City officials like Erickson at that time. Also, this is so much bigger than Wehoville. In fact, activists like me were silenced and smeared… Read more »
There is not one single person on record who was fined $300 for not wearing a mask in West Hollywood. It was quite the opposite actually. People did whatever they wanted. Like scooters on the sidewalks and smokers in restaurant patios, none of it was/is enforced. It wasn’t until restaurants took matters into their own hands to protect their own staff who were in harms way that members of your so called medical freedom movement had something real to bitch about.
Anything to get that mistake of a Councilmember out of weho. Sepi never cared about the city or residents, she only cares about her own career. Good Riddance.
I would appoint Sepi to be Queen of Mars if it would get her the hell out of our city!
Go Sepi! I think she would represent us well in Congress.
I’m just sad that she will have to endure the lies and absolutely VILE rhetoric coming from the Larry Block’s blog Wehoville.
It is common knowledge in the community that comments criticizing Mr Block, or commending Mayor Shyne will never see the light in his publication so it is refreshing to read something like this. Go Sepi, Go!
Sepi Shyne has alway put HERSELF first. Congress would be no different than the city council (lol, honey you were NOT elected mayor as your language would assume, you were dumped on citizens by a city council tradition you inherited). Shyne is not qualified nor does her abusive and berating behavior make for an electable candidate. All Shyne and her grab for the brass ring will do is shine a harsh spotlight on the politics of West Hollywood and the inadequacies of our city government and personnel. Instead I vote to recall/impeach Shyne.
This is delusional nonsense. Does she still claim to be the only officially Iranian person of color?
Delusional clown. There’s no place for her intolerance and racism in West Hollywood, let alone Congress. She demeans any office she holds.
You delusional clowns said the same crap about Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and how did that did that work out for ya?
Unfortunately, Horvath won the election. She’ll continue to hurt many people.
Shyne is delusional. A charlatan, a liar, a bully, a racist, etc.
Horvath and Shyne make me proud to be from West Hollywood.
All of you MAGA commenters that believe all the lies on that other blog make me sick.
She is very bright and talented, I say, go for it!
or she could just…go.
She is not qualified. She is not well liked. She is not in it for the people, she’s in it for herself. Her political ambitions are fueled by delusions of over accomplishment. She’s horrid.
Enough with your out of touch All Lives Matter BS. Every person Mayor Shyne supported did well in this last election. Numbers don’t lie. Goes to show how much you know, which is nil. Sepi fo Congress all the way!
