West Hollywood Hosts 2022 Transgender Day of Remembrance

“Tonight, we will discuss how we lost lives of transgender and non-binary individuals due to transphobia,” said Shane Ivan Nash, Chair of the Transgender Advisory Board of West Hollywood, during his opening comments at the 2022 Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony. “Some of this content is graphic. If you need to exit to take a breath, you’re welcome to do that.”

The ceremony took place at the city’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room Sunday night, following a candlelight vigil hosted by city and community leaders mourning the loss of life in a mass shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs Colorado.

The 2022 Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony was a packed house inside the council chambers. Catered food from Fresh Corn Grill and refreshments were provided. There were some resource tables with information on the LGBT Center’s Trans Wellness Center and other organizations like the TransLatina Coalition. The event also offered plenty of swag like free COVID-test home kits, condoms and lube, stickers, LGBT flags, drink spiking testing kits, and fentanyl testing strips.

The ceremony was led by Jazzmun Nichcala Crayton. The event included speakers, musical numbers, prayers, and the reading of names to memorialize people who have been murdered as a result of anti-transgender violence. This year, the Transgender Advisory Board of West Hollywood voted to include the names of transgender and non-binary individuals who committed suicide in the reading of the names.
