The City of West Hollywood will co-sponsor a pro bono legal name and gender marker change clinic for transgender individuals, taking place on Tuesday, September 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Plummer Park Community Center, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, rooms 5 & 6.
The City of West Hollywood and Bet Tzedek–a nonprofit legal services organization, are joining pro bono legal volunteers and members of the LGBT Bar Association of Los Angeles, to host a free legal clinic to help individuals complete the paperwork that is necessary to apply for a legal name and gender marker change. Volunteers will also assist with completing fee waiver applications.
According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, approximately two-thirds of transgender individuals surveyed reported their identification documents are not up-to-date. Accurate IDs are essential to opening bank accounts, starting new jobs, enrolling in school, traveling and more.
Bet Tzedek is a non-profit law firm committed to addressing these challenges with free, comprehensive legal assistance and representation, volunteer and court-based self-help services, and legal education to more than 20,000 people each year.
Bet Tzedek’s services keep families in their homes; secure care for those with physical, developmental or intellectual disabilities; protect seniors from abuse and real estate fraud; ensure access to safe housing and legal wages; and obtain guardianships for children to stay in safe, stable homes.
The free legal clinic is free. Space is limited, so RSVPs are required.
