West Hollywood City Council will Elect a New Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore

At a Regular West Hollywood City Council meeting on Monday, December 18, 2023, the City Council will call for nominations and election of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore to be installed on January 16, 2024 at the Reorganization Meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The City Councilmembers serve for a term of four (4) years and are elected at large. The City Councilmembers select one of their members to serve as Mayor and this office rotates among the members of Council on their yearly reorganization which used to occur in April. At the March 1, 2021 City Council meeting, the City Council changed the rotation schedule and installation of the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore to better align with the November election. The direction to the City Clerk was to conduct the election at a meeting in December and install the new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore at a meeting in January.

By way of this item, staff is requesting that the City Council conduct the elections for the
new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore and install the newly elected Mayor and Mayor Pro
Tempore at the January 16, 2024 City Council meeting.

The person elected West Hollywood Mayor will hold the title during the City’s 40-year anniversary celebration, which is expected to be spectacular. Current Mayor Pro Tempore John Erickson, is also expected to be elected and move forward as Mayor, although it is possible that council member John Heilman may be nominated (but may not get all the votes to be elected) to be mayor. Heilman has been a West Hollywood council member since the very beginnings during city’s cityhood. This is his last run in the council.

It is not yet clear who will be elected Mayor Pro Tempore (the title could be changed to Vice Mayor by the Installation Meeting). Council member Lauren Meister had a run as mayor last year, so it will be between Council members Heilman and Chelsea Byers.

I would give the mayor position to John Heilman since he was here when Weho became a city. What has Chelsea Byers done for the city? Absolutely NOTHING! She should be recalled for incompetence.

The majority voted for Chelsea. Considering Heilman was voted out in the last election and he barely made council in this election, he shouldn’t get to skip the line to mayor just because he’s latched on the city council for all these decades. You want to blame Sepi for everything that’s wrong with this city, but not hold Heilman accountable for his horrible policies? give me a break. you have no self-awareness

You are nuts. Sepi and Chelsea voted to defund the sheriff’s department in the middle of a massive crime wave. That is the height of incompetence. They should both be recalled.

You are literally the definition of nuts. Our new vice mayor Chelsea was not even in city office when this supposed defunding of the sheriff’s happened. This is what I mean. You are the problem, not the solution with your twisting of facts and rewriting history. This is what you people do. You twist things around enough times until you convince yourself the lie is true. Gross.

The mayor position should go to John Heilman…he’s been vital to the city’s development since the beginning and it would be nice for him to be seated in the mayor’s chair for the 40th anniversary.

The Mayor position should go to the next person in line. The mayor pro tem should go to the person who got the most votes. Sorry Heilman.

Chelsea Byers is not qualified to be on our City Council, let alone be mayor.

I’m terrified of her past record of anti-Jewish activities and do not feel safe around her.

I’m Jewish and don’t understand why you’re terrified. Chelsea got elected to her position and deserves to be there.

Larry Block called her an antisemite in the blog he purchased to attack his oponents. Chelsea made the mistake of valuing the lives lost in Palestine. She fell into the trappings of if you speak against the war or the atrocities happening in Palestine that it automatically means you hate Jewish people. It does not!

You have a better solution to get rid of Hamas? Hamas is responsible for the misery in Gaza. This could be over in hours if they all surrendered. The Hamas terrorists brutally murdered hundreds of young progressive Jewish kids who were attending a peace concert. Only disgusting despicable people murder innocent young people who were there to promote peace. These people do not want peace. If your neighbor was shooting rockets into your place or threatening to kill you every single day I am sure you would have a different opinion.

If anyone deserves to be called Mayor during our city’s 40th anniversary, it’s John Heilman. He has stewarded our city from day one. He has looked out for the citizens, helped bring back law and order and has been a pillar of consistency on a fly by night council since retaking his seat.
