    WeHo Focuses on Bicycle Safety with Workshop Series at Plummer Park

    The City of West Hollywood continues to focus on bicycle safety. The city is co-sponsoring three Bicycle Education Safety Workshops that will give participants hands-on training to help people feel comfortable with their bikes and riding in an urban environment.

    All three classes will take place at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in the North Parking Lot at Fountain and N. Vista Avenues. The Bicycle Education Safety Workshop series is co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood, Metro, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, and the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl.

    The classes are free. Advanced registration is requested by visiting Eventbrite or by calling (213) 629-2142 x114. Participants will receive a free helmet and a set of bicycle safety lights. Don’t forget to bring your helmet.

    On Sunday, July 14, 2019 at 9 a.m., Back to Basics will cover bicycling basics and will show participants how to improve their bike control skills. Participants will gain a sense of confidence to get on a bike for everyday travel or recreation. This class is ideal for people who know how to ride a bike, but who are not very comfortable getting on a bike. Course topics will include: biking necessities (helmet fit, lights/reflectors, locks, clothing), pre-ride checklist, basic bike handling skills, bike services, and events offered by Metro; the class will be 1.25 hours (off-bike: 30 min/ on-bike: 45 min).     On Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 9 a.m., Rules of the Road will cover the rules of the road and transform participants’ knowledge of how to ride a bike into practical skills to navigate city streets and use their bikes for everyday travel. This class is ideal for people who are comfortable on a bike but may be nervous navigating city streets. Course topics will include rules of the road, route planning, navigating common hazards, riding around and on transit, pre-ride checklist, bike services, and events offered by Metro; the class will be 2 hours (off-bike: 60 min/ on-bike: 60 min).     On Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 9 a.m., Street Skills will be a guided ride where participants can practice in real life the knowledge and skills learned at the former two classes. This class is ideal for people who would like to practice and enhance bicycling skills on city streets. Course topics will include: rules of the road, group ride etiquette, riding around transit, navigating hazards, avoiding accidents, bike services, and events offered by Metro; the bicycle safety class will be 2.5 hours (off-bike: 30 min/ on-bike: 2 hour).     Then, be sure to save the date for CicLAvia—Meet the Hollywoods Presented by Metro which will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard between N. La Brea Avenue and N. San Vicente Boulevard. The City of West Hollywood, Hollywood, and East Hollywood will be transformed into car-free, open streets for the day.
