The City of West Hollywood joins communities nationwide in recognizing May as National Bike Month. Established in 1956 and promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month showcases the many benefits of bicycling and encourages more people to give biking a try. Whether biking to work or school, riding to save money or time, pumping the pedals to preserve health or the environment, or simply exploring the community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons to ride.

To celebrate Bike to Work Week, the City of West Hollywood, in collaboration with the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, will host a pop-up “pit stop” aimed at bicycle commuters on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. It will take place adjacent to 8743 Santa Monica Boulevard, just east of Hancock Avenue. Cyclists will enjoy light refreshments and giveaways, such as free LED safety lights and a limited number of bike helmets. Information about the City’s many upcoming bike and pedestrian safety projects will be provided. Community members are encouraged to follow the City’s mobility and streetscape project pages on the Engage WeHo portal to receive information and updates.

For generations past and to come, the League of American Bicyclists is the grassroots movement to create safer roads, stronger communities, and a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone. Through education, advocacy and promotion, we work to celebrate and preserve the freedom cycling brings to our members everywhere. They believe bicycling brings people together, and makes life better for everyone.

According to their website, when more people ride bikes:

    • People are happier and healthier.
    • Our communities are safer, stronger and better connected.
    • Our nation is socially and economically stronger.
    • Our environment is more protected and we are slowing climate change

Their mission is to create a bicycle-friendly America for Everyone, improving lives and strengthening communities through bicycling.

I just had to save the beautiful picture of Santa Monica Blvd closed to automobile & truck traffic but, only open to bicycles & scooters. A vision of a happy future that could be if only we find the courage to make it so.
