Unite Here 11 Reacts to West Hollywood’s Vote to Affirm Minimum Wage Rate of $19.08 an Hour

Several Union workers of Unite Here 11 packed the West Hollywood Council Chambers this Monday, April 15, 2024, to speak in favor of raising the City’s Minimum wage and protecting Paid Time Off (PTO) for part time workers at this week’s Regular West Hollywood City Council meeting.

The union workers stepped out of a school bus carrying signs that read, “WARNING – POVERTY WAGE JOBS ARE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH AND LEAD TO PREMATURE DEATH.”

On the opposing side were some West Hollywood business owners led by the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They hosted a candlelight vigil in memory of “dead” businesses in West Hollywood. A gravesite showed tombstones bearing the names of WeHo businesses that have closed over the years, some allegedly because of the West Hollywood’s high minimum wage.

The vigil was part of the “MY WEHO: KEEP WEHO OPEN” campaign spearheaded by The Chamber, before a scheduled Regular City Council Meeting at the West Hollywood Council Chambers. The tombstones included the names of Rage Nightclub, Starbucks, Kitchen 24, Marcos, Basix, Marix and more.

After several community members speaking for and against the minimum wage and PTO for part time workers, The City Council voted to affirm the City’s Minimum Wage rate of $19.08 per hour and current Leave Provisions through December 31, 2024. Council member John Heilman made a motion to ask City Staff to come back with an ordinance change that will make the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase annual starting in January 2025. the motion was seconded by council member Lauren Meister. The motion passed 4-1 with a no vote from council member Sepi Shyne.

“Business is booming in West Hollywood, and the City can’t even keep up with permitting all the new businesses wanting to open here,” reads a statement by Unite Here 11 following the recent council meeting results. “Workers from a broad spectrum of industries shared personal stories about why rolling back the minimum wage amid the rising cost of living would harm working families. If any changes are made to the minimum wage, it should be higher, not lower.”

Sorry, Folks, Rich People Actually DON’T ‘Create The Jobs, they have strong incentives to reduce their number of jobs to maximize profits. Businesses DON’T Create Jobs, our economy is structured so the incentive for businesses is to eliminate as many jobs as possible and, divert capital to outside investments at local expense. Jobs are created when demand for goods or services is greater than the existing ability to provide them, forcing businesses to hire more people. Increasing the Minimum Wage and having MORE well paid workers spending money creates the demand necessary for job growth❗

People need to vote and get rid of these Union activists running our city. These people are clueless. We are allowing people with no education to drive our city agenda. Where are the people with business degrees or master degrees in business or urban planning degrees who can explain the ramifications of these laws? Does anyone really think the people pictured from the Unite union have an education level greater than high school? I really doubt it. I have been living in West Hollywood for more than 30 years and I have never seen so much incompetence.

PEOPLE did vote and they ELECTED Union Activists and, many of them are ABA Certified Attorneys who have written Law Review articles and, some even hold Advanced Degrees including PhDs. YES there are Unite Here 11 & Teamsters Local 911 who are University Graduates. In your privileged 30 here, if YOU have NOT become an Attorney or earned PhD considering how much you are playing the Education card, how dare you demean any of these hard working people who have suffered far more adversity than you ever have❓

Just as fast as these people were elected they will be voted out of office. PhD’s in religion and woman’s studies are worthless degrees. It’s comical. I hope his parents didn’t pay for that worthless education. You are a master at mis-representing the facts. Those of us who have lived here for years and who built WEHO are going to UNITE and toss these worthless people off our city council. When you think you have an academic advantage, you play the Education card then when it’s clear you DON’T, you fall back on anti-intellectualism as means of validation. A very Trumpian tactic. Then you are going to claim I’m a “low IQ person” who is “a master at misrepresenting the facts,” completely failing to see the contradiction in you position. Guess you don’t realize the whole IQ concept was a racist scam from it’s inception. Reality is, right-wingers CAN’T win elections without gerrymandering & voter suppression and, Unions are loved in America

Yes, Google fires 28 employees after sit-in protest over Israel cloud contract and this after 9 employees were suspended and then arrested in New York and California on Tuesday. So who is going to replace the highly qualified Tech employees being fired by tech illiterate management, YOU❓

No business wants employees who can’t follow the rules and who destroys company property. I assure you, Google will be just fine without these extremists. Good luck to them finding other jobs in their industry. Companies and people are getting tired of it. Many of their fellow employees felt threatened by them. I have an incredible team of programmers and many of them are based in India. There is no shortage of talented people in the tech industry.

Really❓ If you bother to check any credible tech sources like MIT Technology Review You would know there is a serious shortage of talented people in tech. By 2030, there’ll likely be a global talent shortage of MORE than 85.2 million people in the tech sector, leading to losses of over $8.5 trillion in unrealized annual revenue❗

I haven’t had any issues finding great tech people. Regardless, that doesn’t mean Google should tolerate employees who commit crimes or who intimidate their fellow employees. Google doesn’t need these people. They can recruit the best and brightest people because they have the money to pay them well. People want to work for Google. They don’t need troublemakers like you working for their company. Apparently you like using Google because half the stuff you post seems to come from Google searches.

I will bet that almost none of those people from the Unite union even live in West Hollywood. If they want to strike at a large hotel for better wages and benefits more power to them but mandating that all businesses in West Hollywood even small family businesses live by their rules is beyond outrageous. These people know nothing about running a business. There is a big difference between the Sofitel or Marriott Hotel paying people $19.08 an hour versus some small mom and pop store on Santa Monica Blvd or some small restaurant. “WARNING – POVERTY WAGE JOBS ARE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH AND LEAD TO PREMATURE DEATH.” The way out of poverty is and always has been education. Unite here has done nothing but help destroy our city and the policies they support will eventually lead to fewer jobs as more and more small businesses close due to the high cost of doing business in this city.

Why were all of the Unite Here 11 speakers not told to state what city they lived in? Were they paid to speak from their union to attend? If this wage increase and POV is such a great thing than why not go after all the other cities that lag behind us? Why should any business want to operate within city limits anymore? It was clear to me that city council has no clue how small businesses have been hurt by these policies.

If they work here or part of the local Unions they are considered stake holders and, how much & where they pay their taxes does NOT effect their free speech rights. More nonsense. I have no issues with unions for the right people and in the right industries. If the Unite union was able to get their employees better wages and benefits from Marriott and Sofitel, etc then more power to them. I said I was against taking union policies and creating laws that are one size fits all. What the Marriott can afford to pay is not what some family owned business can afford to pay. Once again, you have NEVER created a job so you wouldn’t know anything about that.

No, you don’t create jobs when you put small businesses out of business. You need to find better resource material. If you only make $19.08/hour then that is your fault. I pay my housekeeper $50/hour because she is great and I consider her family. When people work hard and they care they will be rewarded. If they are not rewarded there are tons of businesses out there who will hire them in a heart beat. The problem is paying lazy people more than they are worth. If you are trying to make an effective counter argument you need to cite some credible sources that back your position. You should of learned that in College but, I doubt you ever went. What you are doing is called an argument from anecdote, an informal logical fallacy, where anecdotal evidence is presented as an argument; without any other contributory evidence or reasoning.
