Two Car Crash Lunges One Vehicle into Home on Fountain Ave

On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at approximately 9:30 pm, a black BMW heading eastbound on Fountain Avenue collided with another car and subsequently crashed into a duplex apartment at the intersection of Fountain Avenue and Detroit Avenue. According to a witness, the vehicle that was struck was making a left turn while heading westbound. The black vehicle was traveling at a high speed, resulting in it crashing through a brick wall and an iron gate, causing structural damage to one of the duplexes’ living spaces.

On the Instagram account @wehounfiltered, resident named Brian, who resides in the building, reported hearing “an extremely loud booming noise that shook the building. Two cars collided near here, and one of the cars somehow smashed through the retaining wall and gate… I was home but not injured, and I don’t think anyone else in the building was either. Unfortunately, I do not know the condition of the occupants in the vehicles. There were quite a few LA County firefighters and LA county sheriffs that responded. Something needs to be done. If there were pedestrians on the street corner at the time, they could have been killed.”

“I heard he was going 85 miles an hour,” said witness Megan O. “One person was injured for sure and was definitely taken away in an ambulance. I’m not sure about the second person, but I understand two people were injured, though it didn’t seem critical.”

Megan added that, to her knowledge, no one was injured inside the duplex. However, a yellow notice was posted on their door instructing them to vacate the premises due to structural damage. “I guess somebody just moved into that house,” she said. “It’s an apartment that’s been converted into two apartments. There’s a new resident who just moved in there. A friend of mine took some moving boxes from him because he just moved in. So that’s really unfortunate.”

The crash occurred a day before the City of West Hollywood announced it will reduce the speed limit on Fairfax ave, and on Fountain Avenue, from 35 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour. However, this change will only affect N. Fairfax Avenue between the north and south City boundaries (Fountain Avenue to the north and Willoughby Avenue to the south) and Fountain Avenue between N. La Cienega Boulevard and N. Fairfax Avenue. Detroit and Fairfax are a block west of La Brea Avenue.

Need to add bike lanes and narrow the vehicle lanes on Fountain ASAP. You shouldn’t physically be able to drive 85mph without fear of scraping your car again planters or parked cars.

Wow, you had a guy driving 85 mph in a 35-40 mph zone! I am surprised nobody was killed.Nothing good would have come out with a speed like that on Fountain Ave.I don’t like to drive that street when I visit.

The drivers who use that street need a attitude adjustment. The street is very narrow in some places along with the narrow lanes.Speeding is not wise on that stretch.
