Todd Michael Schutz, Partner of Famed Author Bret Easton Ellis Arrested in West Hollywood

Todd Michael Schultz, the partner of author Bret Easton Ellis, was arrested in West Hollywood. According to reports by local authorities, he has been charged with trespassing. He was apprehended on Tuesday, February 13, at the West Hollywood condominium he shares with the 59-year-old novelist, known for works such as “American Psycho,” “Less Than Zero,” and “The Rules of Attraction,” reports PEOPLE magazine.

In a text message to The New York Times, Ellis explained that Schultz was grappling with “serious mental health issues exacerbated by drugs.” He described Schultz’s behavior as a result of a psychotic break, emphasizing that the episode was nonviolent. According to Ellis, Schultz did not intend to commit burglary but mistakenly entered an open apartment, believing it to be Ellis’ residence.

According to reports, during the incident, a distressed female resident of the condominium made a 911 call, reporting that a man had entered her home and started rummaging through her belongings, as per The New York Times. She also informed management that the man was unresponsive when asked to leave.

Building representatives responded to the call and detained the individual, later identified as Schultz.

Schultz’s initial court appearance, scheduled for Friday, was postponed to the following Tuesday because he was deemed unfit to attend, Ellis informed The New York Times. He is being held on $51,000 bail, as reported by The Los Angeles Times, citing police sources.

Ahead of the rescheduled court date, Schultz is under lockdown in a psychiatric ward at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility, The New York Times disclosed.

At the age of 21, author Bret Easton Ellis saw the publication of his debut novel, “Less than Zero” (1985), by Simon & Schuster. The controversial bestseller was followed by his third novel, “American Psycho” (1991), which garnered significant attention upon its release. Despite facing widespread condemnation from the literary establishment for its perceived excessive violence and misogyny, the controversy surrounding the book led to Alfred A. Knopf releasing it as a paperback later that year, after Ellis was dropped by Simon & Schuster due to numerous petitions to ban the novel.

Four of Ellis’s works have been adapted into films. “Less than Zero” was made into a film in 1987, bearing little resemblance to the novel. Mary Harron adapted “American Psycho,” released in 2000, while Roger Avary’s adaptation of “The Rules of Attraction” followed in 2002. “The Informers,” co-written by Ellis and based on his collection of short stories, was released in 2008. Additionally, Ellis wrote the screenplay for the 2013 film “The Canyons.”

It is no secret that Todd Schultz has problems beyond addiction and poor mental health. He has an extensive and troubling social media history. Schultz is about to be deemed a vexatious litigant in the Central District of CA where the Hon. John A. Kronstadt is presiding over four of the seven vexatious lawsuits filed by Schultz since May of 2023. As a pro se plaintiff, the defiant Schultz has used the courts to harass his critics, his ex online psychiatrist, Elon Musk, a federal and a state court judge, and additional officers of the court. All funded and enabled… Read more »

The thing is that Bret is just as sick. He’s addicted to this guy. Bret needs serious mental health care himself. This whole thing SCREAMS extreme codependent.

This is just the half of it. In 2021 Todd was arrested for domestic violence against Bret.
