The Studies (Untitled Flags) Exhibition by Rubén Esparza Opens at WeHo Library

Untitled (flags), a new series by artist Rubén Esparza, debuted at the West Hollywood Library on Wednesday, May 22, as part of the 2024 WeHo Pride Arts Festival. The exhibition presents studies of his large-scale analog and digital artworks. It will run from May 22 to September 16, 2024 at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.

    Library Hours:
    Mon — Thurs 11am – 7pm
    Fri — Sat 10 am – 6 pm
    Sun — 1 – 5 pm

Rubén Esparza’s Untitled (flag) series challenges the symbolic meaning of the American flag and questions the social and political history that has made it so recognizable across the globe today. A symbol of the American
dream for some and capitalist imperialism for others, the history of the American flag is fraught and complicated.

In choosing to construct his flags out of familiar utilitarian materials, table clothes, cardboard, and cast-off remnants of cloth (a nod to Rasquashismo and ready-made art) that speaks of his Chicanidad and queer identity –

Esparza is the founder and director of the Queer Biennial and Queer Califas.
Parking is available at the Library parking Structure.
