Specialized Allez Sport Bike Brazenly Stolen in WeHo Using Angle Grinder Saw

A Specialized Allez Sport bicycle was brazenly stolen in broad daylight on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood this morning, using what appears to be an angle grinder to saw off the lock. The incident occurred in front of Barry’s Fitness Studio at 8383 Santa Monica Boulevard at roughly 7:30 a.m.

Barry’s showed West Hollywood resident Alex Silverman security video footage of a suspect sawing into his lock in front of the gym. Sparks can be seen as the suspect sawed through the lock, after which he rode away with the stolen bike.

“I get the sense the guy has done this many times,” said Alex. “It was a $150 lock, and he cut through it in about 10 seconds.”

Alex says he locks the bike in front of Barry’s all the time during his workouts before he bikes to work. He lives not far from the gym. He locked the bike around 6:10 a.m. this morning, and the bike was stolen about an hour later, right before he came out of Barry’s. He said he’s never had a bike stolen before, and he’s lived in New York, Philadelphia, and now West Hollywood. The white Specialized Allez Sport is valued at $2,100, including accessories.

Alex called the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station and filed a police report. “They came very quickly,” he said. “They broadcasted the suspect’s description over the radio and said they’d call me if they get any leads.”

“There are very few locks that can’t be cut through with an angle grinder,” he added. “It’s just wild that he could do that without anyone noticing. I don’t blame the staff at Barry’s at all; it’s not their job to be watching what’s happening on the sidewalk, but there were plenty of people driving by who could have seen what was going on. That said, he managed to do it very quickly.”

Alex said he would avoid parking his bike on an open street in the future. “I assumed it would be safe on busy Santa Monica Boulevard, but I’ll have to just keep my bike inside from now on.”

The stolen bike has been listed the Bike Index website with more details on the make and model:

Now there are highly affordable bikes that the Great City of West Hollywood could easily afford to give away to those who need them and, drastically reduce the need for them to steal from others.

With so many scary, freaky folks slithering up and down Santa Monica Blvd., we clearly need a permanent police presence on our streets. The Block by Block kids are useless and our current police force has no interest in or motivation to protect residents.

Well maybe you should come out with some of my ANTIFA friends as they give away sandwiches, donuts and, drinks to people up & down Santa Monica Blvd., they all seem nice to me. Now the Block by Block kids and law enforcement do show their interest in protecting the interests of the establishment and, will likely give us a problem.

I feel badly for any crime victim but spending $2,000 on a bike is STUPID, narcissistic and you are asking for trouble in this day and age. You won’t get a lot of sympathy from the 99% for this.

People have every right to buy whatever they want for whatever price they choose without letting their decisions be influenced by street hoodlums who might steal or destroy it. I agree with concerned neighbor that if a criminal can perform that kind of theft on a very visible public street, at that hour of the morning, that makes fire fly from his saw while he’s stealing & very fearlessly riding off, on camera, on the stolen bicycle, something is quite wrong with the quality of the citizens safety & protection by law enforcement & other of the city’s so-called safety… Read more »

There is a reason rich girls can’t wear their “bling” out and about now. There is a reason guys are getting mugged for their rolexes. https://abc7.com/rolex-robbery-west-hollywood-gym-owner-assaulted-pistol-whipped/14477988/ If all people care about it showing off how wealthy they are I guess they deserve it now.

Gee where are those dynamo “neighborhood ambassadors” crime fighters.(or whatever they’re called) when we need ’em? lol When I was walking my dog one day in my neighborhood, I saw two both standing very still, both texting. I walked my dog, I’d say, for 1/2 hour, maybe a little more or less, & when we got back to our street, both “ambassadors” were still standing in the exact same spot, both still very quietly texting. I’m not saying they weren’t on “official business”, because I don’t know, but when I read things like this, my mind reflects on the texting… Read more »

I have had similar experiences watching them. Once I reported a homeless guy lying in the middle of the sidewalk to the ones near pavillions/starbucks and they did nothing.

Sad that this happened on a busy street like SMB. I hope they catch the guy.

And then what after he’s caught? The LA County DA’s office does catch and release for carjackers so they can do more violent crime. You think this guy is going to get any jail time if he’s even prosecuted?

Did you READ the story you linked to❓ “Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s office announced Tuesday that charges had been filed against Cedeno of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.” Given the bail set at over $2Million and, his criminal past it’s NOT likely he will be seeing the light of day anytime soon❗
