RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 winner Symone, joined the show’s runner-up Kandy Muse on the corner of Melrose Avenue and La Jolla Avenue to reveal a giant mural by West Hollywood resident artist Antonio Rael. The mural, featuring all the contestants of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13, celebrates 11 Emmy Award nominations this year for the drag competition reality show.

The mural is also using the power of social media for a good cause. Those who upload their photo, story or reel to Instagram using the hashtag #DragRaceFYCMural and tag @RupaulsDragRace and @lalgbtcenter, VH1 will make a donation to the LA LGBT Center for each post.

“This was a passion project for me,” Rael told WEHO TIMES. “To have visibility within our community is so important to me. It was a labor of love. And I feel blessed to have been a part of a small part of history within the LGBTQIA Community. I’m hoping the mural encourages people to create and express themselves in their own unique way. I’m hoping that it brings joy to people, especially in these trying times. And I’m glad it will benefit our LGBTQIA homeless youth.”

Rael says the mural will only be up till August 31. “Hopefully people will go and photograph in front of it and post to Instagram with the tags and hashtag that are painted on the mural.”
The mural is approximately 20′ x 30′ and took three weeks to complete. “I painted it freehand. It represents not only the queens from Season 13, but also freedom of expression. I loved people’s positive comments when they came by as I was painting. Several people said to me that the mural brought joy to them every single day. And that was a huge accomplishment for me.”
Symone and Kandy Muse met with the artist for photos and interviews yesterday at 11 a.m. sharp. There was even a cake with an image of the photo that inspired the mural.
