San Fernando Authorities Launch Criminal Probe into Disruption of Drag Queen Storytime Featuring WeHo Drag Laureate

“I am pleased to announce that the City of San Fernando and the San Fernando Police Department are officially launching two criminal investigations into the events at the library on October 25th,” wrote West Hollywood Drag Laureate Pickle the Drag Queen on her Instagram account. “As I believe the perpetrators will come to find in time, I am a patient and deliberate person and will continue to assist the police and the city in any way I can to bring these people to justice.”

The City of San Fernando and the San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) stated that they recognize the importance of maintaining public trust. Defending and upholding the values of civility, tolerance, inclusivity, and accountability is critical to their objective.

“On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a group of protestors assembled outside and around the Los Angeles County Library in San Fernando to express their opposition to a County-organized ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ program hosted at the San Fernando County Library,” wrote Police Chief Fabian Valdez. “A number of people supportive of the program also assembled in response to the protest. While there was a police presence for the event, additional officers were called in to protect event participants and restore order in response to provocations by some of the protesters. On the day of the event, SFPD’s main objective was to protect public safety and prevent all present from suffering physical harm. That said, the City intends to hold attendees who engaged in criminal conduct accountable and will diligently pursue their prosecution. While the City recognizes everyone’s right to free speech regardless of its content, criminal conduct under the guise of free speech will not be tolerated.”

The public is asked to contact Detective Vivian Raygoza at (818) 898-1260 or [email protected] with any information pertinent to the investigations. SFPD will evaluate the cases to determine if there is sufficient evidence to present them to the Los Angeles District Attorney for criminal prosecution.

“In the interest of transparency, we will provide updates as appropriate throughout this process,” stated Chief Valdez. “We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work towards maintaining a safe and inclusive community for all.”

A special Drag Queen Storytime featuring 3rd District Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath and Drag Laureate Pickle Drag Queen was taken over by a mob of protestors who successfully canceled the event at San Fernando Library. Pickle arrived to a scene of angry protestors who held signs that read, “Our Kids, Our Consent.” Protesters called Pickle a pervert and groomer, and chanted “leave our kids alone.” Children were not inside the library during the protest, but several people showed up in support of the event.

According to our witness, Pickle was not able to break through the angry mob despite police escorts. They tried to get Pickle through the back entrance of the library, but protesters blocked that entrance as well. They also used a table to barricade access to the library.

San Fernando Police tried to sneak the Drag Laureate through a vehicle, but the crowd did not budge, Eventually, Drag Queen Storytime was canceled at San Fernando Library.

This marks the first time that a protest successfully cancels Drag Queen Storytime in Los Angeles County. The Glendale library canceled an event last summer in anticipation of a protest, but a physical protest has never led to the cancellation of the event, according to a source.

“Thank you, everyone, for your kind words of support and encouragement,” said Pickle after the incident. “I am okay. I’m glad that no one was hurt, and I am once again deeply upset that people think it’s okay to demonstrate this behavior for children who are looking for a safe space to read and enjoy books. I will certainly not be intimidated by a mob, and I am thoroughly disappointed that I and other patrons were physically prevented from entering a public library and that the program was canceled.

At the moment, Pickle said she’d be pursuing a thorough investigation of what happened today and will not stop until responsible parties are held accountable. You have the right to assemble; you have the right to protest. “You do NOT have the right to block people from public resources by barricading the door with a table,” she said.

As West Hollywood Drag Laureate, Pickle serves to enhance the presence and appreciation of drag culture and arts in West Hollywood, as well as promote partnerships with West Hollywood businesses and community organizations; celebrate the spirit and special qualities of the City of West Hollywood and its residents; and inspire an emerging generation of drag artists by celebrating and promoting drag history.

If they want to have these events have them at the West Hollywood library. It’s just asking for trouble taking these types of events to the San Fernando Valley. I don’t know why this event even happened in the first place. They are lucky nobody was shot or killed. It’s completely unnecessary.

Oh please, what a ridiculous comment. Drag shows are for adults they are not for little kids in a library. Thanks to fools like you and pickles people like Ron DeSantis and other despicable politicians just like him are able to make all drag queens sound like pedophiles. These dumb stunts just harm the reputation of the gay community. All the progress that has been made over the last 20 years will be flushed down the drain. If you don’t think events like this will be used in the 2024 election then you’re an even bigger fool than I thought.

Ron Desantis is an idiot just like you.

Reading a book to children is not an adult activity. Do you hear how ridiculous you sound?

All the progress that has been made over the last 20 years” Your first mistake was thinking people like Ron Desantis were ever going to accept LGBT people in the first place. Shame on you. As a gay person, you make me sick. You’re no better than the right wing bigots

You live in your little fantasy bubble. It’s people like you that will help Donald Trump win another 4 years. The rest of the country isn’t like West Hollywood. Maybe you should dress in drag and go read to little kids around the country. Be sure to bring security with you. Ron Desantis may be an idiot in your mind but he was still elected governor of Florida in a landslide. Greg Abbott may be an idiot in your mind but he was still elected governor of Texas. The amount of right wing bigots seems to be growing by the… Read more »

    Natasha,

I think you forgot the part where this happened in Los Angeles County, California…you know the place with a liberal BOS, progressive DA, and Democrat Governor.

LGBT people should never cower in fear. If we had your attitude there would have never been a gay rights movement in this country.

Not all of Los Angeles county is liberal and progressive. 3 or 4 weeks I drove down Santa Monica blvd in Beverly Hills only to find a big Trump rally with people screaming at cars that Trump won. We live in a bubble here in West Hollywood and we assume that everywhere in LA county people think the same way. They do not. There is a BIG difference between West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. Standing up for gay rights doesn’t mean supporting drag queens reading to small children in San Fernando Valley. That is not gay rights. That… Read more »

Whether you think it’s stupid or not, it really doesn’t affect you. It’s not against the law and people shouldn’t be breaking the law by preventing families from entering the library. That is the point.

Yes it does affect me. It affects the entire gay community. We had someone killed in Lake Arrowhead recently for simply flying a gay flag at their retail store. They weren’t even gay they were just supporting the gay community. I see no upside to having a drag queen reading to little kids in a library in the San Fernando Valley. We don’t need these wackos coming to West Hollywood. If we keep going into their neighborhoods you can be sure they’ll ultimately be coming to ours. Just because something isn’t illegal doesn’t make it a good idea. That’s the… Read more »

I *guarantee* you that person that was tragically murdered would not suggest cowering in fear like you think we should. Thank GOD the majority of the LGBT community doesn’t think like you. “Their neighborhoods” what does this even mean?! Do you think LGBT people should all be concentrated in West Hollywood?! What year are you living in??????

There are LGBT people ALL OVER LOS ANGELES. Your mind is fucking warped. Get a clue, you annoying little coward.

Bigots have been coming to West Hollywood for years…haven’t you ever seen them protesting at the pride parades? Are you new?

LOL. Believe me, I don’t cower in fear. I’m just not an idiot like some people who post on here. I think more people think like me than you are willing to admit. Yes, there are gay people all over Los Angeles but it’s the West Hollywood drag queens who are gallivanting out to the San Fernando Valley to read to little kids in their library. I doubt the gay people in the Valley are doing this. I haven’t heard about any drag queens from North Hollywood or Studio City stopping by the San Fernando library for drag queen story… Read more »

The alleged crime was… blocking the door with a table? What would the “punishment” even be, a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct? Considering that Pickle had acted with composure at the Weho event where an activist was violently assaulted, I would have thought he was bigger than this pettiness. Meanwhile Lindsey Horvath’s mentor has been accused of child sex tourism for years, but this is the battle she has picked, I guess.

If the San Fernando Police is conducting two investigations into criminal activity like the opening paragraph suggests, then that means two protestors behaved criminally. But you want to act like you can’t read. Where on here does it say that the alleged crime was blocking a door with a table? With that said, when is it OK to deny someone access to a public building by using aggression and threatening bodily harm? Also aren’t you the same West who used to date John Duran? THE John Duran? If so, then keep in mind your own glass house before you cast… Read more »

Per the article the protestors “blockaded the door with a table” and blocked Pickle’s entrance into the building.. that’s the only potentially actionable “crime” I’m seeing reported. It bears reminding that using mean words, especially in the context of a political protest and in the absence of physical violence, is not a crime. I don’t know you yet you seem to know a lot about my sex life, but I have nothing to hide. I dated John Duran, nonetheless I also ran the #MeToo campaign in support of his accusers, and continue to hold Duran accountable for his reported relationship… Read more »

Drag is a form of adult entertainment. Leave the kids out of it. Drag queens are creating their own drama here.

Actually, it’s the crazy MAGA bigots that are causing the drama. If you don’t like drag story hour, DON’T GO. It’s simple.

We need to protect our children from the transgender propaganda machine. How many more children’s lives do we need to destroy before we stop this madness?

Simply don’t take your kids to the story hour. It’s none of your business what other parents choose to do.
