It was billed as a Rise Up WeHo event. A large crowd of pro-choice women and the men who support them rallied in West Hollywood today, Saturday, May 7, 2022, for a Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights demonstration in response to the leaked Supreme Court of the United States draft opinion stating that a majority of the court would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade’s holding of a federal constitutional right to an abortion.
“Rights 4 for Abortion Rights is calling for a massive protest to prevent the fascist Supreme Court draft we’ve seen from becoming law,” One of the organizers, Annie Day, told WEHO TIMES. “We marched on the streets today, but it is still the beginning of what’s needed. We have to continue. We have to grow. We have to create a situation where they know if they try to take away our rights to abortion, society will come to a halt.”
Day commended the City of West Hollywood for what she said gave a beautiful response to the cause.
“The response was beautiful in the streets of West Hollywood,” she said.
“The Abbey let us make an announcement to their patrons. They stopped their drag brunch. I think people who are paying attention to this draft decision understand that their right to abortion is on the chopping block. That draft also provides the legal framework, not just for the enslavement of women, but it will be the end of gay marriage and it will be a further demonization and brutal criminalization of trans people. If this is allowed to be made into a law, it will be a handmaid’s tale and an open fascist bureaucratic nightmare. We have to prevent it through mass sustained protests.”
The Rights for Abortion Rights protest began at 12 p.m. at San Vicente and Santa Monica boulevards. The group marched to La Cienega Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and looped from Robertson Boulevard back to Santa Monica Boulevard. The protest ended at West Hollywood Park where everyone gathered for an Art Party where attendees shared art supplies to create signs and banners to use in upcoming protests planned for next week.
“We had our march in West Hollywood and now we’re making banners. We want to have a number of very large banners with a basic message ‘Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights’ because this is a week of action and this message has to impact and reach all of society. The banners and signs are for people to spread all over the place.
Day listed actions for the upcoming week:
- Sunday will be a call for a day of protests at churches.
- The message will spread Monday and Tuesday.
- Wednesday is a day for banner drops with the hopes of reaching thousands of people on freeways.
- Thursday, there will be a major student walkout.
- It will all build up to a massive day of protest on Saturday when Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights is uniting with the Women’s March for a rally at Downtown Los Angeles City Hall. Protestors will gather at the Federal Courthouse at 9 a.m. and march at noon under the banner “Post Roe Hell No.”
Everyone is encouraged to wear green.
“There is a beautiful significance for the green,” said Day “The green is an international symbol of fighting for abortion rights. It kicked off in Argentina a few years ago when abortion had been criminalized. They fought to decriminalize abortion through mass sustained determined protests and they spread this green as a symbol of which side are you on? It spread to Mexico, Colombia, and throughout Catholic countries where they criminalized abortion. We are inspired by it and want to take up that international fight.”
Roe v. Wade is the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision, issued on January 22, 1973, that legalized abortion in the United States. The City of West Hollywood, in 1993, was the first city in the nation to declare itself pro-choice and the City has continually supported state and federal legislation protecting and advancing women’s reproductive rights and access to healthcare.
