When I was asked to chat with LuAnn de Lesseps from BRAVO’s hit 10-season cable show, The Real Housewives of New York, I had no idea what to expect. I could only envision clips from the scandalous show and think about her much talked about troubles with the law in Palm Beach Florida last December. But the woman I met was a down to earth, with a love of music, and she has a fun infectious laugh.
The dance floor diva, known for her song “Money Can’t Buy You Class,” chatted with me about her Los Angeles cabaret premier, which hits the Catalina Jazz Club stage on May 5th in Hollywood. We chatted about Housewives, and—oh yeah…what kind of Barbie doll she would like to be made of herself.
Tell us about your cabaret show?
Very excited to bring the show to the Catalina. It’s a walkthrough of my life and certain points of my life and the music I like to sing. Singing my original songs “Money Can’t Buy You Class” and “Chic, C’est la Vie” and I invite my friends to come and perform. It’s like a Lawrence Welk/Carol Burnett Show (laughs). It’s glam, it’s funny, it’s amazing talent–just really awesome.
The show is called “Countess & Friends” – Who will be on stage with you?
In my previous shows, I have had Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Laura Benanti–a Tony winner and who plays Melania Trump on Colbert and Jack Shears from the Scissor Sisters. Just amazing talent. In LA, I have a lot of other celebrities coming. One being, Jenni Pulos from Flipping Out. She’s going to work “Money Can’t Buy You Class” with me. We’re doing a rap version of that song (laughs), which is a lot of fun.
Other than your three songs, what else is on your setlist?
I sing The Beatles’, ‘A Little Help From My Friends’—‘a little help from my friends, not your friends, my friends (laughs).’ Also ‘Almost Like Being in Love,’ ‘Money,’ ‘Love’ and ‘Chic’.
Do you enjoy performing live?
I love it. I love telling jokes, I love singing and I love hosting, so it’s the perfect venue for me. It’s like being in my living room with me, it’s very cozy and entertaining, and a lot of fun. I get to tell all my good jokes, I talk about my journey in life and I talk a little bit about the housewives, etcetera (laughs).
Are you excited for the Los Angeles debut?
I am very exciting and really looking forward it. I love being out in LA. I’m coming out early, so I can actually do a bit of dinners with friends and going to Deepak Chopra Center for a week and I’ll be nice and relaxed when I come back to LA for the 5th.
Do you know if the LA Housewives will be attending the show?
Yeah, I think Erika Jaynes, Camille Grammer and Lisa Rinna.
Will they be filming an episode at the show?
I don’t know (laughs). That is a good a question. Not that I know of, but you never know.
You recently became sober, what advice do you have for someone out there who is struggling with alcohol?
When the hair of the dog stops working and you don’t feel good every day. It’s time to stop.
Who has the best pad from your NY co-stars have?
Bethenny, by far.
I could not find any toy products like a Barbie doll made on the Real Housewives of New York. What toy would you want to be made of you?
Oh my god, that is a bazar question. A toy someone would make of me…? Me, in a cabaret dress with really red lipstick on and she is called “Cabaret Red” (laughs).
What’s the best thing to come out of doing the Real Housewives for you?
Get to see yourself a second time around. Who gets that right? Like, did I say that? Did I do that? Do I look like that? It’s a major learning experience and you get to reflect on yourself, and take a good look at yourself in HD. And it’s not always pretty (laughs). That’s why I miss the old Hollywood glamour. Where are those screens that make the sirens look fabulous? Really, you have to get that close to my face (laughs)?
What was your favorite moment in the last 10 seasons on the show?
Oh my god, singing with Natalie Cole. That was fabulous for me.
You going to be on hand at the San Francisco Pride what do you have planned?
I’m still working on my schedule. But I’m so happy to be there for Pride. I’m super excited and can’t wait to celebrate and I’ll will be playing at the Nikko.
What’s the next for you?
Watch my show, Wednesdays, on Bravo.
