UPDATE – Drag Story Hour is Coming to West Hollywood

Drag Story Hour is returning to the City of West Hollywood starting on April 15, 2023. The series of story time readings by drag performers for children of all ages is presented by the City of West Hollywood in partnership with the West Hollywood Library.

A rally was planned in defense of Drag Story Hour at the West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. BAMN, the event organizer cancelled the event because they don’t anticipate there being any opposition protesting the drag queen reading.

BAMN describe themselves as a “Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary.”

This article has been updated to reflect that the demonstration is not happening.

Drag Story Hour was created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco in 2015. In 2017, the City’s Arts Division funded the first Drag Story Hour at the West Hollywood branch of the LA County Public Library. The West Hollywood series is produced by Pickle the Drag Queen.

I hope there will be no trouble at these events. From the look of the top photo, parents will be in attendance as well,so anything questionable can be explained or stopped.

The format doesn’t appear to allow singing or dancing as there is hardly any room for that.Probably the library will not allow that as well.

As far as I know, there hasn’t been much pushback against the drag story time program in Weho over the many years it’s been here. Perhaps because Weho hasn’t featured explicitly sexual costumes or hired registered sex offenders as performers, as some similar programs across the country regrettably have.

Drag is adult entertainment. Children should not be involved. Stick to nightclubs.

We shield our children from a lot of things. Men dressed in bizarre costumes to parody women are offensive to many people. Most children lack the ability to understand this type of behavior, and some will be influenced by it. This behavior is best left in nightclubs and bars.

First off, drag can be performed by men, women, or non-binary people.

Secondly you are depressingly underestimating children. Kids don’t get confused. Their parents do (when they are bigoted).

Thirdly, clothing doesn’t have a gender. What is considered women’s clothing now was worn by men less than 200 years ago. Its purely socially constructed.

Finally, you said “some will be influenced by it”. So? Are they going to become violent? Hurt anyone else? No? If a boy did want to wear women’s clothing……so what? Maybe it will help them learn about they’re gender identity (No matter if its cis or trans)
