Out and About with Mike Pingel: Astro Burger – A WeHo Classic

My friend Kevin and I decided to take a brisk walk down Santa Monica Blvd for some of the best hamburgers in town. I’m talking about Astro Burger, located at 7475 Santa Monica Boulevard, in West Hollywood. The burger spot has been a community institution since 1972. That’s a ton of burgers over their 45+ years.

Astro Burger is a very causal retro restaurant with its cozy patio and retro booths for a sit down experience. The menu offers everything from Breakfast (served Weekday from 7am-11am/Weekends 8am-12pm), to Tacos, Burritos, Fish & Chips, Fried Chicken, Sandwiches, NY Steak, Hot Dogs, and of course, burgers.

The burger menu has all-time favorites like the Regular Burger, Double Burger, Cheeseburger, Double Cheeseburger, Bacon Burger, Avocado Burger, Turkey Burger, Frisco Burger, Chili Cheeseburger, and for those who don’t eat the beef, there Salmon Burger and classic Veggie Burger.

I went for the patty melt on rye. It’s kind of a fancy burger with two creamy cheese slices, hamburger meat and grilled onions on rye bread. It’s one of my all-time favorites.

To compliment my burger, I got their to-die-for-I’ve-gone-to-heaven onion rings and a Diet Coke—Why are the onion rings SOOO good, one might be asking? Well on their website they state “Our critically acclaimed homemade onion rings are hand-battered daily.” I’m here to state for the record, that Astro Burger’s battered fried onion rings are the best I have ever had in Los Angeles.

Kevin went a little more classic to celebrate the day with a Double Cheeseburger with Bacon, Fries and a Coke.

I have to say the burgers don’t disappoint. They were perfectly cooked, fresh and perfect. The onion rings are made from real onions and the French fries were cooked to a golden brown. The fountain drinks were just the right amount of carbonation to syrup ratio.

Astro Burger orders are prepared fresh and are cooked to order. You can even watch them cook everything since the kitchen is right behind the register.

Now, I do have one complaint on this last visit. Well, not really a complaint… I did order grilled onions on my Patty Melt. I ate half of the sandwich, which was heaven, and realized there were zero onions in it. But it was so good, I never missed my onions. I ate the other half with complete satisfaction and realized I don’t think I could have handled the onions.

Due to current COVID regulations, masks are to be worn inside the restaurant except when eating. There are also many tables inside and outside blocked off for lower capacity. Yet the to-go window was hopping. Astro Burger no delivery services. Only Pick up Orders by Phone.

The prices are very reasonable. My meal was fifteen dollars. Burgers/sandwiches range from $6-$12; Fries/Onion Rings from $5-$7; Dinners $13-$15; Mexican Gill items $4-10; Sodas/Shakes $3-$5
