New West Hollywood Gay Bar is Coming to Former FUBAR Space

A new gay bar is coming to the former FUBAR WEHO space in West Hollywood at 7994 Santa Monica Boulevard. Owner Jay Krymis, who also owns Schmitty’s WeHo at 8737 Santa Monica Blvd with his wife Michel Verdi Krymis, posted a video on May 2nd giving the community an update, stating that work on the new bar is underway.

Jay posted on his Instagram that the place is taking forever to finish, but the actual work is almost done. He revealed that the walls will have brickwork and the floor will be elevated with hardwood. There will also be skylights to allow natural light during the day. He added that he’s not yet sure about the name but is open to suggestions.

Regarding FUBAR, he said that chapter is over: “We’re not calling it FUBAR. I think that bar had such an amazing run and so much history and it was such a staple to the community that I think it would be a disservice to bring it back. So we’re looking for something new.”

Krymis officially announced the closure of FUBAR WeHo in October 2022. The former gay bar, known for hosting sexually charged events like BFD Thursdays, Dick’s Den, and Adonis Lounge L.A., closed after roughly 24 years. The dive bar, located across the street from the equally shuttered French Market, never reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown.

During the COVID shutdowns, the space was used as a packaging facility to distribute DRINX MYTH alcoholic beverages. An employee at the time predicted FUBAR would never open again, but she did not want to be quoted.

Recent photos taken by the queen of all things pink, Kitten Kay Sera, show that construction work and demolition continue to bridge the gap for a whole new concept in West Hollywood’s mid-city area.

Krymis told WEHO TIMES last December that he had signed a new lease for another 10 years at the FUBAR location and had plans for the bar that he was not willing to discuss. He said at the time that he planned to bring it back, “FUBAR is coming back in the same old FUBAR spot, but it needs to be cleaned up a bit.”

However, by June of 2022, he was already talking about bringing a different bar to the FUBAR space. He said the bar had its moment, but it was in dire need of upgrades, and he didn’t think he could clean up the space and maintain the dirty, edgy bar that we all know and loved.

The big question is, what should they call the new bar after it was FUBAR WeHo for 24 years?

Anyone else see the tiktok video about the owner not paying his staff on time? But hope it does well for the gay nightlife. The area is so dead at night these days.
