A West Hollywood Sheriff deputy has confirmed that a Metro Bus hit a fire hydrant located in front of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station on Friday afternoon at roughly 2:30pm. The incident occurred on the south east corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard, in the heart of West Hollywood’s LGBT Rainbow District.
Several witnesses say the bus made a wide turn heading east when it hit the fire hydrant, which caused a gush of water to shoot upwards like a giant water fountain about two stories high during certain points in the spill. Witnesses also say that water allegedly flowed for about 45 minutes before LA County Fire Department Station 7 was on the scene to shut off.
The water display did not shut down Santa Monica Blvd, but it did create a lot of traffic on a Friday late afternoon just as 4th of July weekend was ready to go.

This was the second time a fire hydrant was hit by a vehicle in West hollywood this week. A car ripped a fire hydrant and lamp post out of the ground on June 21, creating another water geyser almost two stories high in West Hollywood. That incident occurred at roughly 12:30 a.m. on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and West Knoll Drive in front of the Healthy Spot, located at 8525 Santa Monica Blvd.
There was also a broken water main at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard created traffic jams throughout the day last week on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 . It occurred between 12pm and 1pm. Water gushed out of different cracks on the street. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station released a statement warning commuters to avoid the area and take an alternate route. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and Southern California Gas were on the scene. As well as West Hollywood Parking enforcement directed traffic.
I wonder if we could have curb bump-outs in front of fire hydrants? They may in some cases prevent car wheels from hitting them, but allow Firefighters full access to the hydrants.
