Mayor Sepi Shyne Files Paperwork to Officially Run for Congress

On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, West Hollywood Mayor Sepi Shyne announced via her Instagram account that she submitted her paperwork to officially run for Congress in the 30th district.

“Breaking news from yours truly,” wrote Mayor Shyne. “I, Sepi Shyne, just filed my paperwork to officially run for Congress in the 30th district and I’ve got a whole bag of Sun-Shyne to bring to Washington! ☀️🌈✊ Ready for a journey filled with laughter, change, and a touch of sparkle? Join me! 🌍💙 #SepiForCongress #SunshyneRevolution #ca30.”

Mayor Shyne’s About Page found at sepishyne.com reads as follows:

“Mayor Sepi Shyne understands firsthand what it means to fight for a safer, stronger future for yourself, your family and your community. It’s a fight she’s been a part of her entire life, one she’s fought alongside so many in our community – and it’s a fight that she’s ready to bring to our nation’s capital as our next Congresswoman.

At the age of 5, Sepi’s family fled the Islamic fundamentalists that had recently seized control of Iran. In search of a world where Sepi would have the freedom to grow and learn and her brother would be safe from forced military service, Sepi’s parents brought their two youngest children to join their older siblings in the United States.

Like so many, Sepi and her family were guided by a belief that opportunity and freedom awaited them in California. Her path to graduate college and graduate school was not an easy one, but today, Sepi is the first LGBTQ+ woman of Iranian descent in the world to lead her city.

For more than 20 years, Sepi has worked hard to make that American Dream a reality for all who seek it, leading the fight for equality and civil rights for marginalized communities.

When Sepi was elected in 2020 to the West Hollywood City Council, she got to work immediately. In her first hundred days in office, she fought for support and incentive programs for locally owned businesses working to rebound after the pandemic hurt their bottom lines. Sepi took immediate action to increase rental assistance and began tackling the homeless crisis in the city and region. She supported accountability measures to audit and increase transparency in our local water agency. Sepi took measures to ensure that equity and inclusivity was at the heart of the city’s actions, including creating the social justice task force to ensure that Black, Indigenous and other people of color had a voice at the table. That was just in the first 100 days. Sepi hasn’t stopped fighting for her community, making real progress on the issues that matter most to working families.

A lifelong supporter of workers, Sepi worked to raise the minimum wage to the highest in the nation, while supporting small businesses as the transition took place. In 2021, West Hollywood earned the LAEDC Most Business Friendly Small City Award under Sepi’s leadership. And as a fighter for a cleaner environment for all of us, she took action to shift the food service industry in West Hollywood to sustainable plastic alternatives and fast-tracked our climate action plan by 10 years. Understanding that healthcare is a basic right she supports Medicare for All, and knowing that homelessness is a pandemic she took action and as a result homelessness dropped 60% under her leadership.

Knowing that crime was an increasing concern for her community, Sepi took action, finding creative solutions that provide more than lip service – they provide solutions. Sepi revitalized and strengthened the Block by Block Security Ambassadorship program, helping to prevent and report crime on residential streets. She required increased training in nightlife areas to prevent sexual harassment and assault, and made history by helping West Hollywood become the first city in the nation to initiate Drink Spiking Test Strips in local nightlife facilities. It’s Sepi’s creative, innovative approach that has led to decreased crime in our community and is much-needed in Washington.

Among her other accomplishments, Mayor Shyne served on the City of West Hollywood’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, on the City of West Hollywood’s Business License Commission, and on the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Advisory Council on which she continues to serve. She has also led many boards and organizations, including the LGBT Bar Association of Los Angeles, and as a Board of Governor and Steering Committee leader with the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles. Mayor Shyne is a Co-Organizer of WeHo Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a community group that was created during the pandemic to help provide resources for seniors, people with disabilities, and people in immunosuppressed households via social media and volunteer check-in calls.

In every board and organization she has led, she has recruited and elevated women and people of color to leadership positions to create more diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Sepi received her Bachelor of Science from San Jose State University with a double concentration in Accounting and Management Information Systems and a Minor in Drama with an emphasis in Directing. She received her Juris Doctorate with a specialization certificate in litigation from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.

Sepi lives in the Mid-City area of West Hollywood with her fur babies.”

Absolutely shameful. This woman has disgraced herself in West Hollywood and hurt our community. No values, no morals, no qualifications for office.

meanwhile you are using Trump’s playbook to come after people you disagree with. Saying Sepi is similar to Trump is the type of gaslighting Trump is famous for. you fool no one here though.

I don’t know what makes her think she is qualified to run for Congress. She is partially responsible for why we have developers building high rises all over WEHO using “builders remedy” even though all these buildings are against our current zoning laws. She also was the one pushing to defund the sheriff and eliminate deputies in the middle of a massive crime wave. She won’t be getting my vote. I want someone with good common sense who isn’t owned by a corrupt union.

literally a soundbite from Wehoville with no substance. You people love to focus on one person and blame her for all the problems in the city. In return she uses that hatred against her and always come up on top. She may not win congress, but I predict she’s going to do better that you wish for her. So keep on hating.

I don’t hate her. I don’t even know her. I focused on one person because she is the one running for Congress. I won’t support anyone who supports defunding the sheriff’s department during a crime wave. She was also one of many city council members who made a massive blunder and allowed builders to build high rises all over residential neighborhoods because they failed to do their jobs and pass a zoning plan for low income housing that was required by the state. Now we are all paying the price for their incompetence. You seem like a very bitter person.

Anytime you disagree with someone these days they use the word hate. It’s used to shut down opposing thought. I don’t hate her either…don’t even know her. What I do know are her policies…all of which have hurt this city and divided this community. She’s literally held office for a community of less than 38,000 people ..and for less than three years and she wants to represent a larger part of the Los Angeles? Hard no.

Oh you very much hate her with a passion. You people love to point out that she has no power as mayor, but somehow she and she alone has the power to destroy the city and her policies singlehanded have the power to divide this community, etc. Meanwhile that’s Wehoville’s playbook designed to piss you off with no substance.

You seem like a bitter and very uninformed person. You are the type of person who is responsible for 4 years of Donald Trump and possibly 4 more years of his tyranny. Thanks for absolutely nothing.
