A new restaurant, Marvito, is set to open in the city of West Hollywood, marking the latest business endeavor aiming to occupy the former The Garden of Taxco space at 1113 N Harper Avenue. According to the California Alcohol and Beverage Control (ABC), the status of the establishment is pending, particularly regarding the transfer of liquor licenses 47 – On-Sale General Eating Place and 58 – Caterer Permit, currently in process from El Patron Mexican Restaurant & Cantina in Tarzana.
The Instagram account @marvitoweho describes Marvito as an “all-day dive bar meets psychedelic honky-tonk.” A post dated September 27, 2023, features a vintage photograph of The Garden of Taxco, providing customers with a glimpse of the establishment’s future location. As the space remains boarded up, it is difficult to ascertain the progress of renovations or predict an opening date.
From available information, Marvito appears to have ties to Chez Marvin, a French Bistro and Wine Bar situated near the West Hollywood border at 8114 Beverly Boulevard. Chez Marvin is renowned for its “simply prepared classic French Bistro fare, made with local fresh ingredients, and old-world real wine.”
Marvito is not the first restaurant to try to move into that space.
Marvito is not the first restaurant to attempt to inhabit this space. In January 2022, it was reported here that Salud Mexican Restaurant was slated to move in, as per ABC listings indicating a pending 47 On-Sale General Eating Place license transfer from Trejos Cantina in Woodland Hills. However, it seems the deal with Salud did not materialize.
The Garden of Taxco, a fixture on Harper Avenue in West Hollywood for nearly half a century, was renowned for its hospitality reminiscent of a home in Mexico City. Established in 1971, the restaurant relocated to a new site on Santa Monica Boulevard in 2016.
Presently, Garden of Taxco operates as a ghost kitchen at 8470 Santa Monica Blvd, not far from its original location, catering primarily to takeout and delivery orders (text “GARDENS” to 33733 to view the full menu).
Marvito currently hosts various pop-ups across Los Angeles, with no definitive opening date announced for its West Hollywood establishment.
