Lisa Vanderpump SUR Restaurant Ditches its OUT Zone Front Patio

SUR Restaurant in West Hollywood, partly owned by reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump, has given the sidewalk back to the people and opted to ditch its Out Zone front patio. The restaurant located at 606-614 N Robertson Blvd, scaled back the extended patio, which took up the entire sidewalk in front of the restaurant. The added patio space was part of the City of West Hollywood Out Zone Program established in the summer of 2020 to support business during the COVID-19 Shutdown.

On November 17, 2023, construction workers were seen tearing out the wooden planks that were in place as a temporary walkway which extended onto Robertson Boulevard and took up the parking metered spaces in front of the restaurant. Tables, chairs, heat lamps and plants were moved back inside SUR and the sidewalk is currently open to the public (it took about two weeks to get concrete k-rails removed in front of the restaurant).

The open sidewalk also means an open street with four new metered parking spots added to the eastside of Robertson Boulevard between Melrose Ave and El Tovar Pl (there are now 5 metered spaces; one existing meter space turns into valet parking in the evenings). The return of the metered parking also means added revenue for the City of West Hollywood.

In July 2020, the City began a Temporary Outdoor Expansion Permit (TOEP) program by offering streamlined approval for businesses to use sidewalks, on-street parking spaces, and private parking lots as areas to expand operations while protecting health and safety.

The program was expanded and given a fresh, new name: OUT Zones (Outdoor Use Temporary Zones). These temporary expansions provided outdoor commercial space in public right-of-way for restaurants, shops, and personal care establishments to move operations outside to ensure social (physical) distancing and meet with health orders from the state and the county. More than 60 West Hollywood businesses participated in the temporary OUT Zone program.

SUR Restaurant had the option to apply to make the Out Zone permanent, but decided to go back to its traditional setup.

“The return of the metered parking also means added revenue for the City of West Hollywood.”

I guarantee the parking revenue is pennies compared to the extra sales tax revenue that would be generated by the restaurant having more tables. On street storage of cars is generally a terrible use of space in a busy city. Countless studies during and after the pandemic show that the sales tax receipts are a much better choice for situations like this.

Hopefully this is just a temporary change for the “winter” and they’ll be back with a new setup in a few months.

I am sure you have walked by Stach this delapitated wood walk way with big possibility of an accident.
Just so people can party on a sidewalk is mind boggleing.

Honestly they should remove them all it really makes the city look unappealing and messy. Especially that none of them keep nit clean or maintain it properly. Looks awful.

LA is unappealing. It isn’t the city. It’s the whole damn state!!!!!!

Hopefully Tristan will open up the alleyway next to The Chapel. That is public right of way, and not your personal storage space for unused tables and chairs. It hasn’t been used for at least a year and it is a real eyesore. The city gave the Abbey that space for free to give them more space and then David Cooley has the nerve to complain that the city does not support businesses. I hope they get rid of them all.

Thank goodness. These things are an eyesore and are rarely used any more. Glad that Norah and Pura Vita ditched theirs, hope The Naughty Pig and Trocadero on Sunset between Sweetzer & Harper do the same.

Good. A reassessment of these in 2023 shows that 90% are eyesores and haven’t been properly taken care of.

Normal would require a new governor, affordable living and get rid of the Dems.

Yay. The sidewalk is finally given back to the pedestrians! Looking forward to the day when Santa Monica Blvd is given back! More parking, cleaner look and safer for pedestrians. The “outdoor use TEMPORARY zones” should have been just that…temporary.

Thank you for caring about the people and the neighborhood. It’s too bad that other restaurants are too selfish to care. It’s also too bad that the city makes the people and the neighborhood priority #2 and allow for this lunacy to continue.

It’s the stupid governor that is causing the lunacy. You want to blame someone? Blame newsome.

Great news! We need to start to dismantle all of them in the city and also return the Cafe La Boheme parking lot to a parking lot.

Yes! LaBoheme should be the first business to be forced to move their business inside, since they have shown a complete lack of gratitude for that giant patio area they were gifted by the city during the pandemic. Let their customers park in their designated parking space and give us back our street parking.

La Boheme is interesting because they actually BENEFITTED from the covid restrictions. That place was near empty almost every night before 2020 and I think many ppl suspected they were barely staying open. Fast forward to summer 2020 and they get that huge parking lot for outdoor dining and are doing great business 2020-2022. I’m sure they hired plenty more people (bussers and waitstaff). Their business has slowed down as the world has gone back to normal, and now they want to say the minimum wage is the reason why they had to lay off some bussers. The owner is… Read more »
