    Learn More About West Hollywood’s Business License Commission at Upcoming Study Session

    The West Hollywood Businesses License Commission is holding a special study session at a regular meeting on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the West Hollywood Public Meeting Room – Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

    The study session will be an overview of the Commission’s purview, roles, and responsibilities pursuant to Chapter 2.32 of the West Hollywood Municipal Code, The Business License By-Laws, the Ralph M Brown Act (government code section 54950 et seq.), and the Code of Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials as well as an overview of the neighborhood and Business Safety division.

    At the regular June 6, 2023, Business License Commission meeting, staff informed the Commission that they would be bringing forth a Study Session item to provide an overview of the Commission’s purview, roles, and responsibilities. The goal of the Study Session would be to help provide clarity and guidance to the Commission on their roles and responsibilities. Included in the Study Session will be a review of Chapter 2.32 of the West Hollywood Municipal Code, establishing the Commission, the established By-Laws for the Commission, the Ralph M. Brown Act, the Code of Conduct adopted by the City Council by way of Resolution 01-2604 as well as an overview of the Neighborhood and Business Safety Division.

    The Business License Commission consists of seven members who are required to have
    a significant interest in the city such as residency, business or residential ownership,
    economic involvement, or some other valid link to be determined by the City Council, to
    the purpose of the Commission. Members cannot be officers or employees of the city.
    Members are subject to a background check.

    Each member of the City Council appoints one member of the Business License Commission. The Council as a whole appoint the remaining two members. Appointments are made at a regular Council meeting.

    The Business License Commission have the power and be required to hold hearings as required by Title 5 of the West Hollywood Municipal Code, to determine whether to grant, deny, modify, suspend or revoke business licenses, except hearings relating to the granting, denial, modification, suspension or revocation of taxicab licenses. They consider and recommend to the City Council adoption of amendments to the Business License Ordinance and other ordinances and resolutions pertaining to business regulation. They also perform other tasks as directed by the City Council.
