There were numerous police activities on N Gardner Avenue this past Friday, June 14, 2024, ranging from arson and a report of a shooting to a car crash.

At roughly 7:00 a.m. on Friday, neighbors woke up to the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD) Station 8 responding to a fire at 1032 N Gardner Street. According to reports, an unhoused individual set fire to a Brugmansia (also known as Angel’s Trumpet) tree located in front of the building. A neighbor had already put out the fire with his personal fire extinguisher by the time a fire truck arrived. The neighbor became hostile when LACFD would not replace his fire extinguisher. He then lashed out at another neighbor who was taking photos.

Later that day, at roughly 3:00 p.m., West Hollywood Sheriff deputies responded to calls reporting a shooting on the same street, closer to Santa Monica Boulevard. According to reports, a business transaction went sour between two individuals. One individual tried to rob the other person involved in the transaction. A gun was drawn, and according to the victim, the suspect shot at him, but missed. The street was cordoned off to moving traffic while the Sheriffs investigated.

Around the same time, a car crashed into a pole in the same area, spreading shattered glass all over the street. The car crash was unrelated to the robbery attempt that led to a shooting. It is not yet clear if another car was involved, if anyone was injured, or what caused the accident.
