Former West Hollywood City Council member and former Mayor John Duran has conceded in the race for West Hollywood City Council this morning, a day after challenger Robert Oliver concluded his own bid for three open seats in the council. Duran began the race strong in third place on November 8, 2022. He has since slipped to the sixth spot and has remained there after several election updates.
In a statement posted on his social media, a reflective Duran acknowledged he will not be elected for city council even though votes are still being counted. “I do want to congratulate my former colleagues Lauren Meister and John Heilman on getting back on council (Although John Heilman is just holding on by a mere 20 votes. It has to hold! For the sake of the City!),” he wrote on his Facebook timeline. “And I want to congratulate newcomer Chelsea Byers.”
The most recent West Hollywood elections update shows the same candidates in the top three positions as of November 22, 2022, 3:11 p.m. Results continue to show Mayor Lauren Meister in the lead with 6,055. Chelsea Byers gained 15 votes since the last update and has moved from 3,934 votes to 3,949.
John Heilman is still holding the third of the three open seats, but just barely, with 3,912 votes to Zekiah Wright who is closing the gap with 3,892, a 20 vote difference. (Zekiah was 21 votes away from 3rd place with 3,877 in the last update).
Wright has kept Robert Oliver in the 5th spot since last week. He currently has 3,754 votes.
John Duran’s entire statement conceding his efforts for West Hollywood City council are below:
“Hi all. I have resurfaced. I needed a Saturnical moment of reflection.
I did not get re elected to Weho Council again. Votes are still being counted but not gonna happen. I do want to congratulate my former colleagues Lauren Meister and John Heilman on getting back on council. (Although John Heilman is just holding on by a mere 20 votes. It has to hold! For the sake of the City!). And I want to congratulate newcomer Chelsea Byers.
Here’s the deal. Every time there has been a major shift in my life – I am always fearful of the unknown. But I have learned to walk forward with Faith and fear – and it always turns out that there are new adventures waiting ahead. Who knows what? Who knows where? Who knows with whom?
All I know is that I have 6 decades of cherished family and friends which makes me the RICHEST man in the world by far. God will nudge me in the right direction with whatever is next. Suit Up. Show Up. Into Action.
Will save my gratitude list for tomorrow’s holiday. But for now – THANK YOU to everyone who supported my campaign for WeHo council in 2022.
COVID is still here. Get your shots. Democracy is still alive. Give thanks. Love is still all around us. Be Joyful.
Safe travels today everyone. Thanksgiving Weekend is upon us….”
