Jennfer Lopez Recognizes David Cooley for 33 Years of Service at The Abbey WeHo

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) made a surprise appearance at The Abbey WeHo to present founder and former owner David Cooley, with a plaque recognizing him for 33 years of service at The Abbey WeHo. She was also there to promote her Delola alcoholic ready-to-drink spritzes, which she served at the outside front bar.

A video posted on @theabbeyweho on Instagram, shows J-Lo speaking to a delighted crowd saying, “I’m here to celebrate someone who has been so supportive of me and so many other artists, and someone who has given 33 years of sanctuary and ceremony and service to the LGBT community. And that person is the founder and my friend David Cooley who has been out here on the streets for a long time.”

The plaque is a Sanctuary Community Service recognition that will hang in the main dance area  Abbey WeHo, located at 692 N Robertson Blvd.

Other footage shows J-Lo working the bar during The Abbey’s Drag Brunch where she served guests her Delola drinks, which will hit stores, restaurants and bars last April — each contain a different spirit. The Bella Berry is made with vodka, the Paloma Rosa has tequila and the L’orange features an amaro base. The 750ml bottle retails for $23 and the 375ml is $12.

J-Lo’s appearance at the Abbey was kept secret. An announcement for that Sunday drag brunch did mention that this was one drag brunch people did not want to miss. The pop singer was kept from the public view in front of a blue velvet curtain that was propped in front of the entrance.

David Cooley announced the sale of the LGBT institution in the heart of West Hollywood to entrepreneur Tristan Schukraft. Both men jointly announced an agreement for the sale of The Chapel and The Abbey WeHo last November.

Correct, the new owner of the Abbey, Tristan, wanted David to be recognized as he should be. Glad they coordinated with JLO to make the ceremony special.

Very nice! He built a great business. I remember being at the original Abbey across the street which later became Bossa Nova. He put in years of very hard work.
