Irv’s Burgers WeHo is expanding. The beloved West Hollywood burger stand is opening a second location next month on the south east corner of La Brea Avenue and Olympic Boulevard in the former home of Top Round roast beef stand. Eater Los Angeles reports that the new Irv’s is set to open as soon as March 3rd.
Co-owner Sonia Hong is reportedly sticking to the same formula by providing a simple, commuter-friendly burger stand. The new location at 1000 S La Brea Ave will feature outdoor seating, standing counters, and a serving window for Hong to work her magic, including her beloved paper plate doodles.
The corner of La Brea and Olympic has been home to many restaurants, including a previous burger joint called Pop’s Burgers over half a century ago. Hong and her partner Lawrence Longo, along with chef Armen Piskoulian, are keeping things simple and sticking to the original menu for this new outlet.
This means Angelenos can enjoy existing menu items that include the signature Just For You burger, a double burger, hot dogs, chili cheese fries, and milkshakes. The expansion comes less than a year after the group opened their first new location following several years of darkness for the historic Route 66 brand.
Irv’s Burgers WeHo officially opened this past July. The West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce gave the historic burger stand the ribbon-cutting treatment to welcome Irv’s back to the City of West Hollywood . West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister joined WeHo Chamber members and owners Lawrence Longo and Sonia Hong for the grand opening.
The Chamber presented Irv’s Burgers WeHo with a framed dollar bill for good luck and then Mayor Meister gave them a proclamation.
The beloved burger joint first opened in 1946 and moved to West Hollywood in 1950 at Santa Monica Boulevard and Sweetzer Avenue, close the West Hollywood City Hall (The Conservatory West Hollywood took over the space and uses it as a coffee stand).
It moved to the 7998 Santa Monica Boulevard location in 2018.
Way back in 1966-67 I used to eat at Pop’s Hamburgers. At the time I was going to Wilshire-Crest Elementary School and John Burroughs Jr High. Irv’s is moving into a space that Pop’s had built sometime around 1967. Prior to that Pop’s was located in a dingy space just west of La Brea that was only a walk-up hamburger stand.
