Hundreds Rise Up for Rafah at a Demonstration at Plummer Park West Hollywood

Around 200 protesters gathered at Plummer Park in West Hollywood for a demonstration that was billed as a Rise Up for Rafah Los Angeles Action. “Join us in drawing the red line for people of Gaza and demanding an end to Hollywood and media complicity in the genocide,” read a flier shared on social media. The call for ethical and accurate reporting was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement and supported by groups including the ANSWER Coalition, Al-Awda, and PSL.

The protesters marched on Fountain Avenue and turned north on La Brea Avenue, passing iconic landmarks like the Dolby Theatre and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, shutting down Hollywood Boulevard before returning to Plummer Park via Highland and Sunset. The protest remained peaceful as participants sought to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza and Palestine.

In a manifesto, organizers stated, “We cannot let the entertainment and media industries in our own backyard get away with supporting genocide! We, the masses, draw the red line for our people in Gaza.”

The ongoing conflict has seen relentless bombing by the IDF, resulting in over 35,000 deaths in Gaza, with two-thirds of the victims being women and children. Recent attacks, including the bombing of tents sheltering displaced civilians in Rafah, have provoked global outrage.

“We are gathered here today to tell the United States government to keep its hands off of Rafah,” said protester Remo. “We have watched as Biden lied to the public about having a red line about invading Rafah, which currently houses over a million civilians who have been besieged by Israel for eight months straight. Biden said very clearly that there is a red line and he would not allow arms shipments to continue going into Israel if they invaded Rafah. Well, Israel invaded Rafah and guess what happened? Biden walked back his red line. He continued to give them arms using our taxpayer dollars, and we think that is unacceptable.”

According to one of the demonstrators, the gathering grew to 1,200 people, but we have not been able to confirm that number.

The Palestinian Youth Movement (“PYM”) states that the are “a transnational, independent, grassroots movement of young Palestinians in Palestine and in exile worldwide as a result of the ongoing Zionist colonization and occupation of our homeland. Our belonging to Palestine and our aspirations for justice and liberation motivate us to assume an active role as a young generation in our national struggle for the liberation of our homeland and people. Irrespective of our different political, cultural and social backgrounds, we strive to revive a tradition of pluralistic commitment toward our cause to ensure a better future, characterized by freedom and justice on a social and political level, for ourselves and subsequent generations.”

Thanks for covering it, Mike. Some people’s initial concerns that Jewish community would be intimidated by the peace march were unfounded. The protest was peaceful and unified in our message. Arab and Jewish Americans marched side by side for peace. No member of City Council were present, and I was the only candidate in the race to attend. But principled people of all political persuasions were present: patriots, independents, and leftists overcoming partisan divides to say NO to genocide.

people who run for office to elevate their public profile are the absolute worst. They know they don’t stand a chance in hell, but they’re only in it for clout. Meanwhile there are serious candidates out there and these wannabes just get in the way and waste time.

Gay Pride festival started at the same time and the Council members were there making opening remarks- you probably knew that but you like to shift narratives

City council was up at 5am that morning to meet the press. They had a packed schedule, so calling them out for not attending your silly protest that holds no weight in the big scheme of war just smacks of entitlement.

Never intended to call anyone out. I had invited some council members and other candidates to attend but understand if they had other duties. But more generally, it’s unfortunate that standing for peace is considered controversial. Even though I don’t agree with some of the current councilmembers on many things, it’s frustrating to see some of them smeared as anti-semites by some residents. I appreciate WehoTimes for covering the protest.

Curious to know how many of these people are LGBTQ+, because they are supporting people who want them dead.

These people should all go to Gaza to help them out. We could fit them all on one plane.

The pictures posted by the WeHo Times completely debunk your lie, the size of the crowd is far more than any of the zionist MAGA groups you support. NOT only that but many of us willing to help in Gaza have been prohibited from traveling there. American Nurse Emily Callahan RN⚕MSN points out how israelis are targeting EMS & Medical staff along with killing Palestinian children❗

I’m sure we can find a way to get you over there. When Hamas returns all hostages alive then I will stand with you to support Gaza. This was 100% caused by Hamas. When they leave the territory and return the hostages this will all be over and we can rebuild Gaza so they can have a decent life not under the thumb of murderers. It’s ironic that the leaders of Hamas live in Qatar like billionaires while all their people suffer. All that money sent to Gaza went to line the pockets of Hamas and build underground tunnels instead… Read more »

We should be trying to get the invading euro-zionists out of Palestine who took over and, the U.S. taxpayers have been obligated to support the genocidal apartheid state of israel. The problems in the Middle East were 100% caused by israel in 1948 on and, NOT the indigenous Palestinian resistance on October 7th 2024❗ NO it’s NOT just Hamas living great in Qatar, it’s basically everyone, guessing you’ve never been there. The “tunnels” save Palestinians lives as bomb shelters.
