High Speed Crash Fractures Rocky and Bullwinkle Statue

A high-speed collision ended with a mangled BMW and a fractured Rocky and Bullwinkle statue on the Sunset Strip this morning. The sunset orange metallic BMW 840i Gran Coupe is  scrap metal after crashing and flipping on its side at the Sunset Boulevard and Holloway triangle intersection.

“In Car vs Moose, Moose sustains fractured ankles, Squirrel just shaken,” reads a Facebook post by photojournalist Jon Viscott. “Saturday morning at approximately 2:15am, a BMW 840i Gran Coupe in Sunset Orange Metallic was being pursued by police on Sunset Blvd, heading eastbound at a high rate of speed. The BMW hit the curb at the Sunset and Holloway Triangle where Moose and Squirrel reside. The vehicle side swiped the base of Rocky and Bullwinkle’s home and flipped over, landing on its side in front of State Social House. 2 persons were inside the vehicle. Injuries of the occupants are not known at this time. Upon close examination of Rocky and Bullwinkle, I noticed that not only is the base heavily cosmetically damaged but Bullwinkle suffered fractures on both ankles. Bullwinkle is expected to have a full recovery. Squirrel just shaken from impact to home. LASD finished their investigation at 10:45AM. This is the second accident with Car Vs. Moose. Morale of the story Moose always Wins. /Signed, Boris.”

Shocking photos from other community members show the BMW flipped on its side. Witnesses reported a loud explosive sound during the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. According to a witness, two people were taken to nearby hospital Cedar’s Sinai, but that has not been confirmed. It is also unclear if this was in fact, a high-speed police chase.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle statue narrowly escaped a car collision last year on December 20th. The famous statue was caught in the crossfire of a three-car accident at the busy intersection.

One of the cars careened into the corner island. The 14-foot, 700-pound likeness of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose was unscathed. However, the plants were destroyed and there is a scuff mark on the actual pedestal from the impact. This time, the statue wasn’t so lucky.

    This story is developing.

When I had a car I thought BMW drivers were the most arrogant and awful people! And they weren’t even in a high speed chase fleeing cops. I hope they die and leave expensive medical bills for somebody else.

It is frustrating and scary since that particular intersection has 2 pedestrian cross walks that merge with that triangle along with a bus stop that is at that stop in front of the statue! What if people were walking in general or waiting for the number 2 bus that has a bus stop on that exact spot? What if there were tourists or diners out enjoying a walk too? What caused this crash and if there will be accountability. I doubt this was a medical emergency that caused it! There could be serious mortal injury and consequences to the public… Read more »

Pretty sure the driver was drunk (or high) and stupid and not thinking about any of the things you mentioned. Drivers like that need to be taken off the road. A car is a lethal weapon and should be treated as such. Drivers need to take other peoples safety seriously & their own when they get behind the wheel.
