Here are Full Details on the Celebration of Life for Worthie Meacham aka MOMMA

On Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 2pm to 4pm, friends and family will gather at Hollywood United Methodist Church (6817 Franklin Ave, Hollywood, CA 90028) for a Celebration of Life for Worthie Paul Meacham III aka MOMMA, followed by an after-gathering at The Chapel at The Abbey.

The event doors will open at 1:30 pm. At 1:45 pm, Rob Richards will be performing an organ medley of Disney tunes. The event has obtained special permission for Mr. Richards to play the church organ. There will also be a 30-minute photo video tribute to Worthie/MOMMA.

At 2 pm, the celebration will begin with Rev. Kathy Cooper Ledesma from Hollywood Methodist Church welcoming guests. Other scheduled speakers include Todd Meacham (Worthie’s Brother), Pauley Perrette (NCIS), Bruce Vilanch (writer/comedian), Brad Bessey (Project Angel Food), Bob Gurr (Legendary Disney Imagineer), Kay Sedia (Tupperware Drag Diva), Mr. Dan from Dragstrip 66, Sister Bearonce Knows & Sister Candy Cide (Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence), Randy Salter (Planning Committee), James Gray (Fruitcake Follies), “Lolly Lardpop” (Fruitcake Follies), Leslie Carrara-Rudolph (Fruitcake Follies), a Councilman of the City of West Hollywood, among other surprise speakers.

Eddie Shapiro & Jeffrey Epstein of Gay Days Anaheim will host the Tiki Room Sing Along. The Tiki Room song was one of Worthie’s favorite things to host during the yearly Gay Days Event!

There will also be performances by Veronica Christenson & Jennifer Wallace of the LA Opera Chorus and the Men Alive Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus.

The memorial will be streaming live on Facebook. Here is the link: https://fb.me/e/52oLQAqCO

Arrive early to park at the church. If the church parking lot is full, one can park at Hollywood & Highland parking.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to two LGBTQ organizations: Project Angel Food (https://www.angelfood.org/) and/or Red Ribbon Project (https://hollywoodumc.org/red-ribbons-30/) at Hollywood United Methodist Church.

There will be a post-celebration held at The Chapel at The Abbey in West Hollywood (692 N. Robertson, West Hollywood, CA). Guests are asked to meet at the back bar to continue the celebration for Worthie/MOMMA. This will be a non-hosted bar.

Thanks Worthie for being such a light in our community. See you on the other side.

We, as a community still need to remember, and acknowledge that Walt Disney was a noted, and powerful mid-century homophobe, anti-semite, union buster and racist: Disneyland was an unofficially segregated, and discriminatory place for many years, both in attendance and employment.Along with other far-right Hollywood conservatives Disney empowered the McCarthy/red scare/ and the communist “witch hunts” that destroyed countless lives. I’m sorry, but Mickey Mouse has become a “trigger” for me, and many others.

I’m over the moon thrilled that you have created such a splendid send off for this glorious person!! We all knew him on so many levels but all of us can agree that we are better for knowing him. This is exactly the party he would be so happy about!! Thank you soooo much.

We would have needed a lot more donations to host a bar or even food.

Bring a flask to the service is just disrespectful. Save it for after.

Unfortunately we’re not able to host any food or beverages at the church. We will, however, be presenting a fabulous show to celebrate Worthie (Momma’s) life. Anyone can join us at the Abbey celebration afterward, whether they choose to drink or eat, or just be with other people who will miss Worthie.

Couldn’t a simple pot-luck reception be held in one of the church’s many public rooms? I have sadly attended many AIDS-era “Celebration Of Life” repasts at the Methodist Church. Refreshments at the Abbey are very expensive for our low/fixed income community. Parking in weho, at the Abbey is also expensive, and difficult for our seniors and disabled to navigate. Sad that many of us won’t be able to “fully” honor and respect “Momma.”

Way to tarnish a delightful celebration of life by bitching about having to pay for a cocktail. One need not travel far in this town to bump into tacky.
