West Hollywood public servant Rita Norton passed away at the age of 97, in the morning hours of Tuesday, August 2. She died surrounded by close family and friends. Flags around the City were lowered in her honor and memory.
“Rita was best known for her work with the West Hollywood Library,” West Hollywood council member Lindsey Horvath posted in a newsletter. “For countless people who came to West Hollywood, she was the person who welcomed you with love and a warm smile, and inspired a passion for reading as well as an appreciation for libraries. She has left an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew and loved her, and we will miss her so much.”
Rita Norton recently served as a member of the City’s Senior Advisory Board, as well as a long-time member of the West Hollywood-Beverly Hills Democratic Club.
Her daughter, Marcy Norton, who serves as a Public Safety Commissioner, and has been dedicated to caring for her mother, asked Horvath to share the following information regarding Rita’s funeral services and reception:
Funeral services for Rita Norton will be held August 5, at 12:30 pm at Mt. Sinai memorial park and cemetery (Hollywood Hills location), located at 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, LA 90068.
Reception will follow at Plummer Park Community Center in West Hollywood, Rooms 5 & 6, until 6 pm.
DIRECTIONS:
If coming from the Westside, Pasadena, or Valley, take the 101 Freeway to Forest Lawn Drive exit; follow the road about 1/2 mile to the light at the entrance of Mt. Sinai cemetary; turn left into the entrance, and proceed a few feet to the information kiosk on your left. You will be directed to the chapel at the top of the hill.
If coming from WeHo, best route is north on Highland Avenue past the Hollywood Bowl; stay to the left to avoid getting onto the freeway, and follow Cahuenga Blvd, which parallels the freeway. Proceed to the light at Barham Blvd. Turn right onto Barham, cross the freeway, and go straight ahead and down the hill to the light at Forest Lawn Drive. Turn right onto Forest Lawn Drive, winding easterly past Forest Lawn Cemetery for about another 3/4 mile to the light at the entrance to Mt. Sinai cemetery on your right. Turn right into the driveway entrance, and proceed a few feet forward to the information kiosk on your left. You’ll be directed to the chapel at the top of the hill.
Second option to go from WeHo is to take Laurel Canyon north into the Valley straight ahead to the 101 Freeway, and turn right to get onto the freeway going east. Exit at Forest Lawn Drive, bearing right and ahead about 1/2 mile to the light at the entrance to Mt. Sinai cemetery on your left. Turn left into the the driveway entrance to the cemetery; proceed a few feet forward to the information kiosk on your left, where you’ll be given directions to the chapel at the top of the hill.
At the chapel, there’s a big outdoor parking lot to park in (free of charge), or you can park on the street in front of the chapel. When the funeral is over, you’ll be directed to return to your car to join in a procession to the gravesite for a brief burial service. Reception to follow.
“May her memory be a blessing. Rest in Peace, dear Rita.”
