Former WeHo Mayor John D’Amico to Host Meet and Greet for Texas Mayoral Candidate Doug Greco

Former West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico is joining the Greco Family to host a meet and greet to benefit Austin Texas mayoral candidate and former West Hollywood resident Doug Greco. The event is taking place on May 11, 2024, from 4pm-6pm at Rocco’s WeHo, 8900 Santa Monica Blvd. Current West Hollywood Mayor John Erickson will also be in attendance.

Doug tells WEHO TIMES that he moved to West Hollywood in 2013 because he wanted to work in the LGBTQ movement, and he wanted to move closer to family in Los Angeles. He lived in WeHo for three years. “Those three years were an incredibly important part of my development, because I got to integrate my interest in working in the LGBT movement as a gay man and my interest organizing,” he said. “I lived on Sweetzer Avenue. I was the program director for year with Equality California and that experience was important to me.”

He said he took that experience with him when he moved back to Texas after the election of Donald Trump in 2016. He helped defeat, and later reform, Texas’s largest corporate welfare program, Chapter 313, which took $1Billion a year from potential school funding and gave it instead to major oil, gas, and manufacturing corporations. His background as a former high school teacher and grassroots organizer, coupled with his experiences at Equality California, has shaped his vision for a more inclusive and equitable Austin.

Doug says he is running to be the only openly LGBTQ Mayor in Texas on a platform of affordability and fighting back against attacks on civil rights from state leaders and the Texas Legislature, which passed six pieces of anti-LGBTQ legislation this past session in addition to harsh anti-immigrant legislation.

“Texas right now is a very harsh state in terms of anti-LGBT legislation,” he said. “I think we need mayors in progressive cities that are willing to stand up for LGBT rights and all civil rights, because in Texas these rights are under attack, and that’s the type of mayor I will be.”

Doug is a former high school teacher and grassroots organizer with the Industrial Areas Foundation in Austin, and moved to California to work in the LGBTQ movement after a former student of his was tragically murdered in 2011.  She was the victim of one of a record 27 anti-LGBTQ murders that year.

At the meet and greet, Doug will discuss important issues that Austin Shares with West Hollywood and hopes the West Hollywood community will help in the effort to elect Austin’s first openly LGBTQ Mayor
