    Flags Fly at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Attack in Afghanistan

    Flags are at half-staff throughout the City of West Hollywood in honor of the victims of the attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

    “As a mark of respect for the U.S. Service Members and the victims of today’s tragic act in Kabul, all flags will be flown at half-staff at @WeHoCity facilities until Sunset, August 30th, 2021,” West Hollywood Mayor Lindsay Horvath posted in her social media platforms.

    At least 60 Afghans and 13 US troops were been killed and dozens of others wounded after two explosions outside Kabul’s international airport amid a an evacuation effort from Afghanistan.

    The Department of Defense has released the names of the 13 service members killed in Afghanistan:

    For the Marine Corps, the deceased are:

    • Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, 31, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
    • Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosariopichardo, 25, of Lawrence, Massachusetts.
    • Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole L. Gee, 23, of Sacramento, California.
    • Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio, California.
    • Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan W. Page, 23, of Omaha, Nebraska.
    • Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez, 22, of Logansport, Indiana.
    • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, 20, of Rio Bravo, Texas.
    • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, 20, of St. Charles, Missouri.
    • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, 20, of Jackson, Wyoming.
    • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20, of Rancho Cucamonga, California.
    • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, 20, of Norco, California

    For the Navy, the deceased is: 

    • Navy Hospitalman Maxton W. Soviak, 22, of Berlin Heights, Ohio. Soviak was assigned to 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.

    For the Army, the deceased is: 

    • Army Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss, 23, of Corryton, Tennessee. Knauss was assigned to 9th PSYOP Battalion, 8th PSYOP Group, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

    A proclamation by the White House reads as follows:

    A PROCLAMATION HONORING THE VICTIMS OF THE ATTACK IN KABUL, AFGHANISTAN
    As a mark of respect for the U.S. service members and other victims killed in the terrorist attack on August 26, 2021, in Kabul, Afghanistan, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, August 30, 2021. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

    IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-sixth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.
