East Meets West with Functional Art and Design at Gallery MOË in West Hollywood

Looking for a last minute holiday gift that expresses your inner artist or perhaps a chic “one of a kind” fashion accessory? Then meet MOË Art Design, located at 638 N. Roberson Ave.

In the heart of WeHo’s Design District and nestled between SUR, Tortilla Republic and a cadre of galleries and trendy shops, a small square yellow sign denotes the stairway leading to the MOË Art Design Gallery, neighboring the tawny Marco Pelusi Hair Studio.

MOË Art Design is a hidden gem that truly captures the spirit of the mom and pop boutique style galleries you will find in Japan.

Born out of the desire to bring a modern Japanese aesthetic to her local community and based on the concept of “joie de vivre”, Yoko Araki launched the original MOË Art Gallery (pronounced MOE-A) in Kumamoto Japan in 1996.

Since opening its doors more than two decades ago, Gallery MOË has built a noteworthy reputation in Japan, based on Araki’s philosophy of “capturing the moment”.

Lovingly curated by Yoko Araki, MOË features a collection of “Functional Art” with ceramics, sculptures, artwork, clothing and accessories made by Japanese artists and designers.

In August, MOË debuted its second location West Hollywood, where you are welcomed by Yoko’s son, Ryo Araki.

The second floor gallery-boutique is divided into two spaces. The front room features the current Exhibition by award-winning Japanese sculptor and ceramic artisan “Chikako Yoshikawa, which has been extended to December 28.

This pristine white-walled space is punctuated by displays of ceramic plates, cups, mugs and other earthenware which include intriguing pastel colored face sculptures that double as wall clocks.

The artist’s work also offers a selection of playful illuminated bowls of white bisque finished fruit, flowers and gourds that also serve as tabletop lamps.

A backroom boutique space sports a mix of fashion accessories, necklaces, brightly colored canoe-shaped glossy handbags and other original fashion selections carefully selected by Yoko Araki and imported from Japan.

MOË  is a not to be missed West Hollywood Design District shopping experience with “Functional Art and Designs” you will only find in WeHo or in Kumamoto.
