Drag Racer is Terrorizing and Disturbing Peace in WeHo Neighborhood

Residents of a West Hollywood neighborhood near La Cienega Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard have reached their breaking point with a persistent disturbance plaguing their weekends as early as 6 a.m. According to neighbors, a drag racer has been disrupting the peace and putting others in danger for the past six months, tearing through La Cienega Boulevard with reckless and loud abandon.

Videos provided by WeHo resident Chris G. show an old, beat-up Buick waiting for the street to clear on La Cienega Boulevard, not far south of Santa Monica Boulevard. Then, it peels off at top speed towards Melrose Ave, only to turn around and do it again. This past weekend, the situation escalated to a confrontation with the driver who was strapped into his seat with a harness, and his car appears to have a built-in padded roll cage similar to what you see at car races.

“This has been going on for like six months,” Chris told WEHO TIMES. “And it’s every Saturday and or Sunday morning. So it’s one of those two or both. This guy drives, I think it’s like a Buick Skylark, maybe like a ’69 Skylark, and it’s just a rust bucket. The passenger seat is missing, and he’s got like the dual seat belts like a harness, and he looks like Kurt Russell in Death Proof.”

Chris confronted the driver, a gray-haired man sporting a Bass Pro fishing cap who identified himself as Bill. He seen in the video screaming at Bill to knock it off because his antics are annoying and dangerous. He told the man he has been repeatedly observed engaging in dangerous driving behavior, including high-speed maneuvers and reckless acceleration that appear to reach up to 100 miles per hour, posing a serious threat to pedestrians and other motorists in the area.

“He waits till the street clears and then he hauls ass down the street,” he said. “He goes at least halfway down if not more.”

Concerned for the safety of their community, Chris and other residents have attempted to address the issue by contacting law enforcement. However, the area is right at the West Hollywood city limits and falls under LAPD jurisdiction, even though the residents on West Knoll Drive in West Hollywood are affected by the nuisance. He says their efforts have been met with frustration as response times have been inadequate, leaving residents feeling powerless.

“I’ve called several times, and they’re like, ‘Oh, okay, we’ll send somebody out,’ then nobody comes out. And if they do, he’s long gone because he does it for a brief period of time, but it’s an intense period of time.”

Chris decided to video record him this past weekend. When the man saw him recording, he drove back around after his takeoff, and an argument ensued. The man said he wasn’t doing anything wrong and justified his antics because cars and ambulances are loud on that street, and he said he wasn’t bothering anybody. After being confronted for his reckless behavior, the man became irate and said he would return at 3 a.m. At one point, he threatened Chris by backing up towards him and his dog while he was crossing the street.

Frustrated by the lack of action, Chris expressed a desire to raise awareness of the issue and hold the driver accountable for his reckless behavior. “I’d love to put this on blast… put pressure on either LAPD or the sheriff’s office,” Chris said, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action to address the ongoing disturbance. “I call the ambassadors to just send somebody who looks official who can report to somebody and say, yeah, it’s definitely going on. This has to stop.”

This should show everyone that the Great City of West Hollywood should join the very best of Humanity in becoming a Carfree City❗ With a Public Transit grid & electric Scooters in place we could ban all private automobiles & trucks from West Hollywood, solving many problems. Many great cities like London, Paris, and Seoul are doing everything from banning diesels to pedestrianizing streets; there are other places where there simply going full on carfree. Belgium’s largest carfree zone, the Great City of Ghent did away with cars in 1996, eliminating persistent traffic jams & accidents with declining air quality.

He shouldn’t be doing pulls on La Cienega. However, the car didn’t sound too loud to me.

Automated detection and enforcement is coming for violators like this. CHP study and vendor evaluation is underway.

In the mean time, a vehicle this loud operating on public streets is a violation and he can be cited for it.

OK,the citizens bugged by this loud auto needs to copy down the license plate of this car and make sure the deputies responding for these complaints receive this info. You already have the video of this man,so it is easy to pass this along.

It is bad enough with the cars doing those street takeovers at night creating those doughnut tire makings, the residents don’t need this headache.I compared the description of the car and it does appear to be 1969 Buick Skylark. Good luck stopping this guy.

I guess the West Hollywood sheriffs department has selective hearing when they are all at Urth Cafe every morning at 6am.

If they can’t hear the screeching tires less than half a mile away for you, I pity your ability as a officer.

We live less than a block from this intersection and hear this more than 3X a week. Also get a lot of motorcycles doing the same thing. It’s annoying and someone is absolutely going to get hurt – probably someone working a valet stand on La Cienega.

What an idiot. It’s only a matter of time before he kills someone and unfortunately it’s unlikely to be him. Also ridiculous that WEHO sheriffs can’t pull him over and wait for LAPD to show up.

It’s not just that area that can hear drag racing. We hear it in my neighborhood too – don’t know if it’s the same guy but it’s definitely a problem. This guy should be identified and fined/arrested. What an idiot.
