Dog Day Afternoons are Coming to WeHo this Month

It’s a dog’s world. People just live in it. With that idea in mind, the City of West Hollywood is co-sponsoring and hosting two dog-focused events at West Hollywood Park.

PAWS/LA’s (Pets Are Wonderful Support Los Angeles) annual PAWSAPALOOZA Festival & Marketplace will celebrate all things canine on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Hollywood Park. This festive family‐friendly event will include more than 40 exhibitors featuring pet‐friendly products and services, as well as activities for kids including carnival games, face painting, balloon art, and more. Food trucks will serve up a variety of food choices, drinks, snacks, and goodies. Fancy-dressed “fur babies” may enter the Canine Costume Contest; prizes will be awarded to winners in categories such as: A Day at the Beach; A Night on the Town; and Doggie Doppleganger. For more information about PAWSAPALOOZA, please visit pawsla.org.

The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s World Dog Day aims to draw attention to the amazing, empathetic creatures that dogs are, while raising awareness about global dog abuse. Started in 2016, the upcoming event will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It aims to create a better world for dogs, both domestically and internationally. The City of West Hollywood invites canine members of the community and their humans companions to visit the city’s two dog parks at West Hollywood Park. A small dog park and large dog park are located on each side of the park’s basketball courts and each area features expanses of open space with shade trees, small mounds, turf terraces, and water stations. In addition, the City operates the William S. Hart Park and Off-Leash Dog Park located at 8341 De Longpre Avenue.

The City of West Hollywood has a history of supporting measures that promote the protection of animal rights and the City is a recognized leader in legislation that ensures the welfare of animals. In April 2003, the City became the first municipality in the nation to prohibit cat declawing. In February 2010, the City passed an Ordinance to address the inhumane conditions endured by “puppy mill” animals by prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in companion animal stores. In September 2013, the City’s fur Ordinance went into effect, which prohibits retail establishments from selling, trading, distributing, importing, or exporting any fur product.

Admission for both events is free and open to the public; canine companions must attend on a leash.
