Council Member and former Mayor of West Hollywood Lauren Meister was a guest in the Nick Halaris Show, which posted on YouTube on Monday, June 12, 2023. Council member Meister shares her inspiring civic origin story, detailing how she went from neighborhood watch captain to becoming an elected official of one of the most competitive local jurisdictions in the country. Lauren reveals her vision for a government that is focused on taking care of the needs of the people.
Halaris and Council member Meister are neighbors, so the discussion is comfortable. At roughly 35 minutes into the interview, Halaris gets into discussing public safety. Meister speaks about why she voted against cutting sheriff deputies, the recent rise in home robberies and the importance of having more WeHo Sheriff’s patrolling the neighbor so that community members feel safe.
She discusses homelessness and the challenges the city faces in trying to help people who have mental health or substance abuse issues and don’t want to be helped, as well as the city’s recent purchase of the Holloway Hotel which will serve as temporary housing for homeless people.
At 58 minutes into the interview, Halaris asks Meister if it’s true that cities like West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica have less homeless people because they shuffle them off to the City of Los Angeles. She says that narrative is “BS” and that people tend to feel safer in West Hollywood, which has a compassionate approach and that the city spends millions of dollars to help people. She points out that as soon as you cross the city limits from West Hollywood to Los Angeles, the tents go up and Los Angeles resembles a third world country.
