City Officials are Investigating Vandalism of WeHo Trees on Santa Monica Blvd

West Hollywood city trees were illegally trimmed along Santa Monica Boulevard near the La Cienega intersection in West Hollywood. A total of 12 trees were butchered on the eastbound lane from Alfred Street to La Cienega Blvd. City officials consider the incident vandalism, believed to have occurred during the Juneteenth holiday on June 19, when a majority of city workers were off.

“The city trees located on Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega and Alfred Street were pruned without authorization from city staff by a private company,” reported Samuel Estrada, the City of West Hollywood Urban Forestry & Landscape Maintenance Supervisor. “A police report for felony vandalism has been filed with the County of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department for further investigation.”

Director of Community Safety Danny Rivas tells WeHo Times that he believes an outside contractor was hired to do the job during the absence of city staff on Juneteenth. He says the investigation is ongoing, and they are currently trying to find hard evidence to prove who is behind the illegal pollarding of the trees, a method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow.

Community members complained to city code enforcement about the condition of the trees, which some say were poorly trimmed and do not match the trees across the street.

“They look horrible,” said one community member who asked for anonymity. “They immediately caught the corner of my eye when I was driving down Santa Monica Boulevard. I called the city to get answers because they are an eyesore.”

A similar incident occurred in front of Block Party and Micky’s WeHo in late April/early May where the trees were poorly trimmed without city permission. The businesses in that area also say they do not know who is behind the trimming. These trees were also trimmed under the radar without code enforcement catching them.

I am upset as why someone to trim these trees. This way I don’t think the trees should be trimmed at all. They provide shade and they are so beautiful all the greenery that they provide for the city when you drive by you see tree line streets …. whoever did this should be chemically castrated so it prevents them from having this surge of energy to do this type of wrongdoing against the Lord’s will again

This news about the vandalism of trees on Santa Monica Blvd is upsetting. It sounds like a deliberate and damaging act. The speculation that a business owner might be behind it to improve their visibility is concerning.
The article mentions the city is investigating and considering filing felony vandalism charges. Do you have any updates on the investigation? Has there been any progress in identifying the culprit(s) or the reasoning behind the vandalism?

Don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out who paid a lot to have this done.

OK, I will be more direct. The building owner and business owners are the only ones who gain from this and would spend the money to do it. Is that better?

Once again, in West Hollywood, no one is minding the street. That’s why the criminals are so bold & fearless, because they know that there’s no law enforcement, just lip service by an incompetent City Council who are completely detached from reality. Where was the sheriff patrol & the ridiculous “security or safety “ambassadors”, or whatever they’re called? A street thug can steal a $5,000 bike by sawing of the chain lock with fire shooting three feet behind it, in the middle of one of the city’s busiest streets, completely visible from miles away, & no one is curious. “If… Read more »

Don’t equate a bike theft with an organized high cost “act of vandalism”. If city permitting was not available, why would the sheriff, building tenants or for that matter anyone walking by not think it was a scheduled trim trimming.

Why would a safety officer consider it a crime for a professional tree trimming service to trim trees in a city where we do it regularly? Would you be aware if an unpermitted tree trimming service showed up on your street? It’s not like they were a group of thugs spray-painting.

Ok, but presumably the vandalism happened late-late at night, or during the wee hours of the morning, right?

First I have never seen or heard of any city or area anywhere that systematically, continually, trims, cuts, prunes trees. The way Weho does for over 20 years all over their boundaries. It’s terrible and huge waste of money. They just cut 4 perfect huge trees down on Hilldale little over 6 months ago for no reason. They are obsessed with destroying trees……I’m sure the contractors don’t want to loose the account I’ve talked to them$$$$.

Tree trimming is not cheap- someone paid thousands for this. Probably the building owner or business owner that didn’t like the trees?

This was very sad to see these trees pollarded. I wonder if the city will remove these trees and replant or if they will just see how they recover

Obviously the only party that has vested interest in paying someone to illegally trim trees is the building owner or someone that owns a billboard or sign that is blocked by the trees.

I live closely and was floored when I saw the trees being pollarded. I wish I had taken a picture now.

Photograph or not, your merely witnessing the massacre may be of some help to city officials.
