Cedars-Sinai Employees ‘Stride with Pride’ to West Hollywood for Pride Month

A group of Cedars-Sinai employees participated in a Stride with Pride march on Thursday, June 27, 2024, to celebrate Pride Month in West Hollywood. Roughly 21 medical workers from the medical center’s gender reassignment unit walked from 8700 Beverly Blvd, in Los Angeles, to West Hollywood’s LGBT Rainbow District on Santa Monica Boulevard. Supervisors, nurses, and administrators who care for transgender people in their ward came out to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

They all wore matching white Stride with Pride rainbow tee-shirts and held their own pride parade down Santa Monica Boulevard to bring awareness to their services at Cedars. They walked to Fiesta Cantina and then bar-hopped throughout the LGBT Rainbow District.

Cedars-Sinai offers comprehensive transgender medicine primary care, gender-affirming hormone management, HIV care, and gender-affirming surgery (facial, chest, genital). It is one of only four academic medical centers in the Western U.S. that offer male-to-female and female-to-male gender-affirming genital surgery, and we offer several other types of surgeries to meet the needs of our patients. Their specialists offer vocal cord and speech therapy, fertility preservation, and mental health and psychiatry services, as well as other support services. Our LGBTQ+ Center opened earlier this year and has specialists in primary care, pediatrics, transgender surgery, reconstructive surgery and cancer screening in an inclusive space. They are firm believers that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, especially at their doctor’s office.

Cedars-Sinai earned the highest designation from Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index this month, making it one of 384 U.S. healthcare facilities to receive this designation.

The index, called HEI for short, evaluates institutions’ policies and practices for equitable treatment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

The biennial recognition is based on detailed criteria grouped under five categories: non-discrimination and staff training; patient services and support; employee benefits and policies; patient and community engagement; and responsible citizenship.

A record 1,065 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2024 survey and scoring process. Of those, 384—including Cedars-Sinai—received the top score of 100, earning the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader designation.

Examples of Cedars-Sinai efforts to better serve the LGBTQIA+ community include the Transgender Surgery and Health Program, the LGBTQ+ Center, annual unconscious bias trainings for all Cedars-Sinai employees, and support and participation at community events.

Throughout the month of June, Cedars-Sinai employees, family members and friends showed their care for the LGBTQIA+ community by participating in Pride events in West Hollywood, Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
