Then there was one… Angel Rincon walked away with the Mr. Los Angeles Leather 2022 title at LA Leather Pride 2022: Dark Angel. The Los Angeles Leather Coalition hosted the long awaited event after being on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic these past two years.
Cathedral City’s LGBT Days boasts to be the first pride event of the year in the entire nation. However, that claim actually goes to this year’s LA Leather Pride 2022: Dark Angel, which took place a week prior to LGBT Days, beginning on Sunday, March 20, and running a series of events leading up to the Mr. Los Angeles Leather Contest and Legion Dance on Saturday, March 26, 2022.
It all came to a head at The Catch One club in Los Angeles where nine leather men took to the stage to compete for the Mr. Los Angeles Leather 2022 title. The group of men had three opportunities to impress a seven-judge panel with a question and answer portion during three leather gear categories; leather wear, sexy leather wear, and night leather club wear.
The event opened to a room packed with LGBTQ people decked out in their hottest leather gear. It all began with a presentation of flags with Regan Carrington singing the national anthem. There was an appearance by The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who gave a blessing. Then host Jeremy Oliver-Roceros introduced the nine contestants. There were three rounds with three outfit changes and three questions, easy, harder and silly. After each round there was a fifteen-minute break for the judges to deliberate.
Calypso Jete Balmain was the night’s entertainment, keeping the energy after both breaks. The crowd went wild for her performance. She did a Janet Jackson number for the first number and a cat woman performance for the second number.
Highlights include the Jim Newman Award for Leather Community Humanitarian of the Year, presented to Michael Lara, the owner of The Bullet Bar; Christian Medina, Mr. Faultline Leather 2020, was presented with The Brotherhood Award; and past winners were brought on stage and shared the history of the Leather; the current sash has all the names of the past 20 years of winners stitched on the inside.
First Runner Up for the Mr. Los Angeles Leather 2022 contest was Francisco Paraies; Second Runner Up was Ronyn LeMuerte. And the sash went to Angel Rincon, the new Mr. Los Angeles Leather 2022.
Then the Legion Dance began with everyone celebrating the leather community being able to be together again after the 2 year hiatus and celebrating their new MR. LA LEATHER!
“From the kickoff, to the meet and greets, to the contest, I’m just so happy everything went off smoothly,” said Gabriel Green. “from start to finish, I couldn’t ask for better. It was hard work but the feedback I’ve been getting is that this was a spectacular contest. It was a joyous celebration. What’s weird about this is the contest is called Dark Angel. I’m directing it and my name is Gabriel. And Angel won. If we ever have Leather Pride trivia, this is it.”
