AMC Sunset 5 Theatre Permanently Closed After Operating for 6 Years

The AMC Sunset 5 theatre has shuttered at 8000 Sunset Boulevard, located steps outside of the West Hollywood city boundaries. Their last day of operations was April 16. The AMC website has already listed that location as permanently closed.

It will not stay closed for long according to reports. Landmark theaters purchased the space and plans to take over in June. It will bring back arthouse movies to the 31-year-old space.

Deadline reports that once Landmark occupies the Sunset 5, it will begin adding new seating and various amenities as the venue remains open for business. Landmark signed a a 10-year lease on the venue which was negotiated and secured by Michael Fant, Landmark’s EVP of Real Estate, and Kimco Realty on behalf of the Sunset Theatre landlord.

“This theater has been a mainstay of the independent cinema scene for over 30 years and is the latest of several strategic Landmark Theatres acquisitions,” Landmark Theatres president Kevin Holloway told Deadline. “The Los Angeles market is ripe with movie fans and creatives, so we’re excited to be expanding our footprint with the Sunset location. We look forward to not only servicing, but also collaborating with the community to create uniquely curated programming offerings and entertainment experiences very soon.”

Laemmle operated the complex until November 2011. It served food and wine and offered arthouse movies as well as mainstream showing.

The Laemmle closed and it reopened as a Sundance operation in 2012. After the Sundance remodel the capacities in the 5 auditoria ranged from 102 to 189 with a total capacity of 630.

They were acquired by Carmike Cinemas in 2015 and that circuit was purchased by AMC in 2017. AMC operated the AMC Sunset 5 until its recent closure in April 2023.
