Alleged Thief Breaks into Tesla Belonging to Candidate for Congress CA-30 Josh Bocanegra

Surveillance footage captures an alleged thief breaking to a Tesla vehicle belonging to Josh Bocanegra, a political candidate running for U.S. Congress CA-30. The time stamp on the video submitted to WEHO TIMES is Monday, January 30, 2023, starting at 17:34:23 p.m. The incident occurred on Holloway Drive, not far from Dialog Cafe near The Sunset Strip.

A man is seen on camera taking two trips into his black luxury vehicle, possibly a BMW. He appears to casually load his car with boxes and shopping bags and is then seen driving away.

“He took approximately $2,000 worth of items,” Bocanegra tells WEHO TIMES. “I usually do not keep valuable items in my car, so it was a coincidence that this happened on the one occasion I did. There were some HomePod speakers, cash, a bottle of wine, and a bag of clothes and shoes that I intended to donate. I’m not sure why I was targeted, but just a few days before this incident, I announced I was running for Congress.”

Bocanegra added that Tesla doors always lock on their own when a person leaves the car. He received a notification when the alleged thief opened the doors. He stepped outside and found the backdoor open. “I’m not sure how he got in,” he said. “Maybe the doors were unlocked at some point. Still, I don’t know how he knew there were valuable items inside. My guess is that he probably noticed the speakers in the backseat while walking by and then decided to come back with his car to take them.”

The West Hollywood Sheriff’s were called to the scene and he filed a report. “My experience with the Sheriff was mostly positive,” he said. “He arrived 40 minutes after I called 911, which was longer than I would have preferred, but I understand that this was not considered an urgent crime. He was calm and attentive throughout the process. He watched the video footage with me, gave me paperwork to fill out, and sent me a link to submit the footage as evidence.”

The political candidate added that the experience taught him to ensure to double-check to see if the car is locked. “Even if you hear the beeping sound and the mirror folds in after you walk away, enable Sentry Mode whenever possible,” he said. “I understand that it takes up battery life, but it is worth it. This is how I was able to get footage of the incident and it will be the only reason why I have a shot at finding the guy.”

Josh Bocanegra is running for Congressman Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) seat after he announced that he would be running for Senate and not reelection for the House in 2024.

Driving a Tesla is bad enough, but keeping $2,000 in it?! Hard pass on voting for this guy.

Maybe you were “targeted” because you foolishly left your expensive car unlocked and full of shopping bags? That you may have been close enough to the car that the proximity key let the thief in? Oh no, it’s because you decided to run for public office.

When I see a Tesla auto,I think the driver must be well-off.Those autos just scream “Money!” The guy probably saw the auto and decided to check it out, hence the missing items.
